Hoping for some advice before I start digging/taking things apart.

A few weeks ago we set off on a journey to the hebrides and back, car performed but it did decided to start this clicking sound from somewhere under the steering wheel.

What I've figured is:
- doesn't matter if the engine is on or off
- doesn't change with wheel speed
- make so impact to the driving experience
- is intermittent but not in a predictable way

Does anyone have an idea what this might be? It's still doing it since and I haven't taken the chance to go looking yet.
