Buy a second hand bmw key, and buy a shell with a blank blade (both on ebay). Get the blade cut to match your car, and take the innards from the secondhand key, and insert in the shell. Hey presto! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

arrr, not quite that easy, yes the above post is correct but you will need it to be coded, now range rover wont code a bmw key unless you know some one, the pre 05 range rover key uses a Phillips PCF7930AS Transponder chip
and it seem very hard to find some one to program it, so if you go to land rover they will only sell you a new key with chip £200.00 plus, unless you have key insurance and you can claim for that key you lost when shopping... V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

I too had this problem, I went down the main dealer route. However it's definitely worth phoning a few to compare prices as I found they varied quite alot. Also they all charged different amounts to then code the keys . I know there is a means of coding them yourself but when youve just bought a new one you want it to work!

The car would need to be present to code a brand new key I believe. however it may be possible from some of the articles I read to code the key yourself . Think it depends on vehicle age. I'm sure someone more learned will appear to help you.

Programming a new Key

Replacing a missing master key is quite expensive from Land Rover, try not to get sucked into the extra cost of "Dealer coding" You can do this yourself in 2 minutes by following the simple process below.

1) Get in and close all doors. Turn ignition on and off quickly and remove the key (all within about 5 seconds).

2) Within 30 seconds of turning the ignition off, while holding down the "unlock" button, press the "lock" button three times. Release the "unlock" button. (You may or may not get the confirmation from the door locks.) Holding the key at your head level provides best results as the key sensor is in the side window pillar.

3) Repeat for each key you have within 30 seconds after the last one you initialized.

4) Right after doing the last key, quickly put the key back in the ignition and turn it on/off again to finalize.

As above! Thumbs Up Exactly! I forgot to say, for coding you can go to a stealer and get ripped off, or you can do it yourself in 5 minutes. I very much doubt that the transponder would be any different to that for an e38 7 series. Believe me I'm not handy with spanners, but even I've managed to re-code a key! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

So exactly what kind of secondhand BMW key will pass muster in the coding process? Anyone actually done it? Pics? (not picks Wink) / Links? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Hold on Shocked there is two parts to coding a key, yes the first part is to open and lock the doors, this is easy and is explained in the previous posts, the second it the transponder chip, this is the part the car looks for to make sure it is the correct key for the car, it is linked in with the ignition and ecu, this coding of the chip in your key can not be done by your self, it will need to be done by land rover or some one who has the coding equipment. i have been looking for some other then land rover to do coding when working on the flip key conversion for the pre 05 cars and as yet i have not found any one. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

When I asked for a new key at the dealers, I was told that it's delivered pre-cut and pre-programmed, with the info taken from the vehicles chassis number held at LR. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

yes i was told that they can programe and cut a key from your vin number but if for any reason you have had a lock change it wont fit and they will not give you your money back, it wold be nice to find some other then the dealer to get keys dome V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.
