I dont think a thermostat is that expensive, around £30-£40 from a quick google search. its basically just a valve with a wax block in, when the wax block melts the valve opens. will need to replace coolant also.

I would think if the pump fails or thermostat stays shut the temp would raise above a safe level.

By the way, have you noticed any drop in mpg? .... I read that if the engine is running below nominal temp the fuel condenses in the cyls and reduces performance and efficiency (not sure if this just applies to petrol engines tho)

Ignore the V8 stuff, that's a walk in the park compared to the TD6  .

My SC has the same issue with the temp gauge. When we had the cold spell the other day the temp gauge barely got off the blue on a 40 mile journey and I wasn't getting any hot air through into the cabin. Time to investigate I think.

It's a new thermostat she needs Nick , I was going to get it done before I traded her in , reason for not doing so

Is the access easier on the S/C? I, too, have the swinging temp issue!

There are some pics on the Jag forum for the 4.2 S/C engine and it seems to be at the front of the engine. And less gudel than Joes very good walk through.

This combined with the binding caliber and the reduced engine performance warning is my welcome to S/C ownership. (In respect to the engine warning I have checked the wiring to the aux coolant pump and it is wired correctly).

9 months later

I finally got round to changing my thermostat and rad today 3 hour job and new viscous fan spanner


Spot on guys it was the thermostat, now stops at the correct temperature while driving.

I've had the low coolant warning a few times in the last few weeks but the coolant was correct

So I removed the header tank and washed it out around ten times

I removed a load of scale from the tank, this was making the float sensor stick
And giving me a fake reading.

All sorted now  RANGE ROVER 04 TD6
