Thinking of 100% audio system change

Has anyone done a complete change and got rid of the range rover gear and just put a nice all in one head unit in?
If so what did you spend?

Is your intention to replace the speakers and amp as well?
An all-in-one head unit can easily be put into a Vogue - a Pioneer 940BT including install would probably set you back around £900.

I would contact CAS, all top guys there and have done a fair bit of work for me over the years.

Looks nice, I wasn't thinking of changing speakers, it's my amp that's been the problem and at £600 for a Replacement it may be the right time to get away from wet audio equipment, plus I can get a chunk back by selling my mk4 sat nav Very Happy

At one time, I was thinking of replacing my whole system including speakers in my L322. Speaking to CAS, they told me that I would have to spend about a thousand just getting replacement speakers to sound as good, let alone any better. So, it really would be best to just replace the amp like you said.

I would probably look into changing the subwoofer too, as they can eventually deteriorate with age. It would not cost too much extra especially considering the replacement amp. I would really be looking for Audison or Alpine amplifiers; very well built and very reliable.

As you own a 04 FFRR, I think you have two 10’’ Subwoofers, you could just replace this with one 12’’. Again, an Alpine SWS-1243D would suit you fine and would be much more responsive than the existing unit.

I am currently working on a complete install on another car that I have and spent a huge amount of time researching the ideal components. PM me if you have any questions.

I'd not thought about an amp to drive the subs, I guess that's vital, it's a shame there is no dab on the pioneer, I might have to do a bit of digging to find a unit as good as it with dab built in.
Thanks for the pointers Very Happy

Have you considered fitting "pre-amp" outputs to your existing Bm54 tuner?
You could then install any amplifier you wanted without the need to replace the whole system.

I went to my local ICE store and he showed me that Pioneer system - although he wanted £2000 to instal it!! Shocked

Apparantly it doesn't integrate with the BMW iBus system without major wiring upgrades to get all the functions to work (inc. steering wheel) - must admit I was well shocked at the price so hearing what EVOeng has said got me thinking! EVOeng - was that price for integrating in a later FFRR with the optic wiring? FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

Nope, that was the price I got when installing it on my early L322 Range Rover.
I think he is having you on at £2000. Which Audio guys did you visit?

If you want, I will contact my fitter again on Wednesday and see what he says.
Have you read this? They do not even charge $2000, let alone £2000!

Yep - that's what I thought - a rip off! He was going on about how difficult it is to integrate it with the old can bus system as all new ones are optical and because of that I would need loads of special connectors to convert it all! For a start he was charging around £950 for the Avic alone, and the rest was for all the 'specialist' work!

I was thinking of doing this AVIC system at the time but the cost (his cost!) was a no no and I just forgot about it until I read this thread! This was back in March.

I always heard my local ICE shop was expensive..........! FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

Normally the output from a head unit is amplified (made about 100-10,000+ times louder than the source) and connects direct to the speakers. A pre-amp output is just the audio source before it gets amplified. So it allows you to use whatever amp/speaker combo you want. In most cars a good £500-1000 amp/speaker combo makes a world of difference. In a Range I'd wager you'd need to spend two or three times that to get a better sound.
