Valve seats leaking oil?

Hi all,

I keep getting a puff of blue smoke when I start up my SC, which I think is oil leaking back into the combustion chambers when the engine is shut off? Once the engine is started it doesn't blow anymore smoke and runs fine. All I want to know is the following really?

1. Apart from the current wear, is this going to damage my engine further?
2. How much does this cost to repair? Is it just seals and lots of labour taking the head off or is it a new head?

The valve seats can't leak oil, do you mean the guides?

Valve stem seals I think is what I meant? The tiny little o-rings that should stop oil leaking into the valves?

Ok. Thumbs Up

Think you can do them without taking the head off, but someone knowledgeable will probably come along soon and give a proper answer.

Are you running on LPG?

Can't do the valve stem seals without taking the head(s) off, compressing the valve springs, removing the collets and removing the valves.

Steve.

There was an old mechanics trick of removing the spark plug and feeding sone narrow rope into the combustion chamber once the piston was down at the lowest point, then keep turning the engine until the rope compressed in the chamber and would stop the valves dropping in once the valve spring was compressed and the collets removed......giving you access to the valve stem oil seals once the spring was removed.

Done it on a few Ford Pinto's but never a V8........the theory should hold though!
