I the pads are well worn there will not be enough room to slide in the new fatter pad without pushing the piston back a bit....

@GE ... I've posted I don't think/ I'm hoping the pistons won't actually need pushing back as the existing pads are new and are only coming out because they need copper greasing and then the same pads will be put back in again so as to stop brake squeal... So having read back the thread twice, unless I'm missing something completely?


Then my last 2 questions still stand re best advice what to do if the brake fluid reservoir does overflow and what direction I put the 2 pins back in after refitting the pads.

Pins are pushed out from outside to inside.

Reverse for putting them back in.

Never had the brake fluid overflow, but if its gets on the paintwork -

my 2p worth,

loosen nuts
jack up and place axle stand underneath
undo nuts and take off wheel
place wheel somewhere where it wont fall on the wheel face
undo brake reservoir cap and put an old towel around reservoir
knock out pins with a punch or large nail whilst depressing the spring plates
put a screwdriver in where the pads are and turn slightly to loosen pads
remove pads and re-grease
replace pads
clean and slightly grease pins
replace pins and spring plates
double check that you have done the above
replace wheel and nuts
tighten as much as possible whilst jacked up
remove axle stands
lower jack so the wheel is touching the ground
torque nuts to 140nm
lower completely and re-torque nuts
screw brake reservoir cap back on and remove towel
stand back and make sure you have done the above
...and relax. ... - .- -.

Against all the odds... I managed the task, well the front driver's side brake pads so far (time constraints).

Took my time, followed your collective advice and armed with Stan's absolute idiot's guide, went to work and the task passed without incident. Even the front brakes still work. I know because I've tried them!

The new Brembo pads that I removed for the purpose of cleaning and re-greasing had no obvious grease on them at all. There were a couple of small circular areas where copper grease had been applied but whatever had been on had obviously long since dissipated so hopefully it is that and only that causing the squeal (the front passenger side, not yet done, is still doing it, so touch wood a good clue there).

From Halfords, I bought 'Comma copper ease', copper grease designed for high temperature aplications and for the prevention of brake squeal. It can be seen on ebay via the link below:

I actually caked this copper grease on the the back of the pads with a paint brush and also along the edges of the pads too, being careful not to get any grease on the business face of the brake pads (along the edges being advice I picked up from the Imprezza Brake pad fitting YouTube video that I referred to).

I've also bought a pair of the following, combined 3 Tonne weight, axle stands from Halfords and they too seem very good, sturdy stands that did the job really well and for £30 they seem like good value for money:

Simple things and all that but I'd rather ask many seemingly stupid questions before starting a task than come unstuck part way through due to ignorance.

I'm accumulating the car maintenance gear, accept I still have no idea but at least I can now fit brake pads... And maybe even future discs!

Cheers Alan, I actually also stuck Duct tape tightly across the middle of the spring and stuck it down either side of the caliper which allowed me to punch tap out and then remove the 2 pins without the spring flying out.
