Driver Side Tail Pipe Smokes

Okay so a few months back the RR was throwing up giant clouds of smoke when being drive, mushroom clouds big enough to cover Mordor. So I went ahead and replaced the PCV valve with all the piping involved and the smoke was reduced considerably (no more mushroom clouds, now only old klunker level smoke from tail pipe). I let it sit for a few months as I got busy with other things. Just two days ago I finally replaced the oil separator and its pipes as well (pain in the back to replace), however the klunker level smoke still lingers, and its coming from the driver side tail pipe only. Any ideas as to what's going on? I tried driving it around to get any residual oil out of the system but still no luck. Any help in figuring out this delemma is appreciated.

PS. For those tackling the PCV valve, use a small mirror to locate the bolts (when you get to the task you'll understand), the mirror will save your sweat and frustration.

Could it still be old deposits in the tailpipe ?? Or just that most of it comes out of that pipe.

What colour is the smoke, white vapour like (i.e. coolant/condensation) or blueish (oil). What about the valve seals, have they ever been replaced.

Is there anything coming out of the other pipe (i.e. could it be blocked ?? ) ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hey Ebajema, I think if there were any deposits (which there were) have disappeared by now. The other pipe is not blocked to my knowledge because clear smoke still comes our of it. The driver side pipe is spouting Grey smoke. Seals haven't been a ouched as far as I know in the past 3 years. Vehicle only has 78,000kms ish. Zambezi Silver Range Rover (2010 Autobiography Facelift)

Mmmmm that is a bit of a conundrum. Do you get any Check Engine Lights and / or faultcodes.

The valve seals could have "dried" up a bit due to lack of use as 78k is not a lot for a car that age. If they are dry and have cracked that is where the oil could go. Grey smoke or grey blue would suggest oil leakage somewhere.

Have you have compression checked on the car ??

I wonder if the cat on one side could be "dying" and causing the smoke but don't know if the grey smoke is a symptom of that.

Any coolant disappearing by the way ? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Nope no check engine lights. The valve seals are fine I'm sure because before the PCV problem, there was never any smoke like this and the PCV failing along along with the seals drying up is a coincidence hard to line up. As for the exhaust, I'm pretty sure that is fine as well since before the PCV failed, it too was performing just as it should. I haven't had the compression checked however that is on my list now. Hopefully I'll be opening up the range tomorrow for its facelift so I'll have a look around then. And all the coolant is as it the levels it should be. Oil is either definitely leaking, or there is still pools of residual oil which likes entering the atmosphere only from the driver side tail pipe lol. There is no sign of a loss in performance, I was feinding around in sport mode yesterday and it performed just as it always does. I'll take it to my friends shop soon, he's worked on numerous X5's with the M62 setup so he might be able to figure something. Zambezi Silver Range Rover (2010 Autobiography Facelift)

Actually regarding the check engine light, it did exist during the mushroom cloud phase, but after only replacing the PCV valve and piping the light went away. Zambezi Silver Range Rover (2010 Autobiography Facelift)

So found out it's not the compression. Compression is perfectly fine in the engine. Couldn't find anything else wrong with the vehicle that may cause this smoke, so just ruling it out as residual oil smoke. Now we wait for it to go away. Zambezi Silver Range Rover (2010 Autobiography Facelift)

Drive the car around gently until it's warm, then get on the freeway and drive at 3-4.5k revs for about 15 mins, should burn out anything left in the tail pipes Thumbs Up
