Local dealer says not done many/any alternators on a 4.2! turning on all the lights, heated screens and heater made the noise a lot worse and then almost goes when everything is turned off again.

It was hardly noticeable in the warmer months and would soon abate but the winter weather has seen it worsen and stay even after a good 10 mile run, so in she goes for fear something gives way.
