Finally having the bus parked up a couple of months,got the air suspension sorted and a new battery and straight through an Mot.The girlfriend and little one were excited at a trip to the supermarket.All piled in on the driveand I managed to travel a distance of 2 yards! Yes I did not get off the drive,a brake pedal that suddenly decided to travel then PING..Check brake fluid level,air suspension inactive,hdc inactive..What the F%$k!!Yes fluid leaking from half way down the vehicle,a common fault,yes I know now but if pipes are hidden by a plastic guard that is not removed for Mot should they be inspected for an mot?What would happen if I had just gone down a steep hill and had a serious accident with a new Mot?Surely this is something that needs addressing and not writing on the certificate 'plastic covers fitted' just to cover their arse!!! Anyway I did read somewhere a main dealers could renew the pipes for £700 but I thought that was a bit much so with a thanks to my mate Gary who helped me out it cost me a total of £15 for fluid and pipe!!!

When i owned my SL55 they had to write off half the MOT due to "covers fitted" as the whole car has a plastic underfloor! Pointless!

And the moral of the story is, strip off all the plastic covers hiding the brake pipes, coat the brake pipes with a thick layer of grease and refit the covers. Works everytime.

The MOT guy I use is insistent that if the vehicle MOT is carried out properly on a FF there will ALWAYS be an advisory about the covers that they cannot see behind. I was quite disappointed as I was hopping for a clean "no advisory / nothing to report"

So if, God forbid, the worst had happened going down that hill you used as an example the MOT station "could" be in a sticky situation if they had not issued an advisory about the bits they cannot see.

My November 2014 MOT says:
001 Under-trays fitted obscuring some underside components
002 Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine bay

I have seen a few comments on here of late "Passed MOT with no advisories!" and thought back to his words..... 2006 4.2 SC

on my old p38 there is the rear axle to body connection, from there going back to the pedal, the line failed, squirting like a tomcat! it was an afternoon to remove, and make up a pipe, and i inspected the rest, they were much better, but the old one coming off, was looking like a cancered worm, and snapped at any flexing. -and it had not long passed its MOT, and -it was visible! -top part of chassis..plenty of mud traps there. why dont they use kunifer, thats nickle plated copper, not cheap steel! the difference is pence

some garages, only let in a 1 foot length to repair old pipe. so if in doubt, renew and/or inspect after..

Having helped Rangeyman to replace these Brakepipes I have 1 question.
Taking off the covers takes minutes and as these are known weak points
in the braking system and the possible consequences massive, why are the garages
not told to take the covers off to inspect?
Surely its a No-brainer??

Mine passed its MOT yesterday, with 10, yes 10 advisories!

They all said "corroded but not significantly weakened" on almost all the suspension components! Including a new component only replaced less than 2 weeks ago! Now, I know it's been wet and salty of late but this is just taking the p155!

WTF???? Sounds like a small amount of surface rust seems worthy of mention but no mention of covers concealing check points?

It does seem strange that the MOT test excludes checking the condition of brake pipes year after year by way of the Mot tester being able to cop out by simply writing an "Advisory" when confronted by easily removable plastic covers.
Perhaps consideration should be given to a requirement that all such covers are removed by the owner prior to presentation for the test.
Interestingly you don't actually hear of many cases of accidents etc caused by failing corroded brake pipes, I only know of one case of a brake pipe failing under pressure and that fortunately was on a driveway.

Mine failed on my old P38, sat on the ramp bleeding them whilst carrying out a routine service!

I have an advisory on my jag that there were "items on the seat so cannot check seatbelt" - When I questioned him and said why didn't you just move the box and put it on the other seat he said he can't touch it! I also have a friend who had an advisory about the sat nav "blocking" the driver view? as she had left Her TomTom stuck to the window????
