it's worth leaving a 13-7 pin adaptor in the boot anyway, then you'll be ready to tow anything.

I did mine earlier in the year, only takes about 30 min to fit the wiring kit. You should also get the towing module and cable/socket with it for the £70ish. You'll pay that just for the module without wiring from land-rover!

Cool, will find a sheltered spot, brew in hand and battle can commence.

What does it do to the gearbox, hold higher revs longer like sport mode or ? Many thanks

Yes sort of sport mode! It's supposed to improve the towing ability, but I'm not wholly convinced by that. But in it's defense I do pull 3 tons + and the trailers are giant brick shaped Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Mmmm. Strange. Mine doesn't. All it does is disable the rear PDC. Fogs and EAS are both active.

The discussion has been had on here before, it seems possibly a bit dependant on model year as to what it does and doesn't do.

on my 2005MY car, it disables rear parking sensors, locks the suspension in normal ride height, changes the way the gearbox works, bulb failure warning for the trailer and gives me a fog lamp cut out. Which is all as per the owners handbook. I think when people checked the owners handbook for their model year it still says it should do all that, but it only does some of it.

I guess there might be one or two people who unknowingly have an aftermarket bypass relay wiring kit fitted, but it could be that some of the Westfalia boxes aren't functioning properly, the car's CCF hasn't been amended to show a towball fitted, or there is some sort of software glitch on some cars.

Yup. It was not fitted by LR but it is an OEM Westfalia tow bar and harness. When it was fitted I was told to go get it enabled by LR. I took it to Green Oval near me but they said the option was not available so they tested it with their MOT tester (LED's) and said it wasn't right. I took it back to the fitter who tested it with his tester (filaments) and it all worked. Sure enough when I hooked up the tin tent everything works as it should regarding the caravan electrics, but no fog light cutout and the EAS is still active. I get the green trailer light permenantly illuminated on the dash and I haven't noticed any difference with the gearbox. I have a 13 pin to 7 pin adapter in the boot which I will fit for the MOT and as they are not allowed to remove it prior to the test it can't fail. The worst I will get is an advisory.

Is the trailer that your plugging in to on led's or filament ? Only the system measures the resistance and determines if you are towing or not, mine will not see my led trailer board but operates it as normal, but some of the trailers that I have towed which have led's cause the indicators to rapid flash and the bulb failure to go off every time I touch the brakes.......Most Evil or Very Mad

But the addition of some ballast resisters to the indicators has sorted them out, I'm going to add one to the brake lights too! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Confused . Com

My so say tow bar engineer states as below, what's your thoughts please ? Mine are buy the Westfalia lead ( where tba) then either fit myself or get him to.
I've used him before on car audio and stuff, fitting very good, purchasing not so.
He quotes;
Up to 2009 it will be 180+vat (plus £50 to fit). It will need coding by Land Rover tho. Many thanks
Paul

get a price for the genuine lead from As they aren't much more than that.

As far as coding goes, most folks reckon it doesn't need it and will work out of the box but LR says it does.... it may be actually no more expensive to get a quote for LR to supply and fit the electrics and code it, from memory i didn't pay more than £250 for them to swap to 13 pin on my current car and the Disco was £90 supply and fit and code..... and by the time you have bought the kit, paid him to fir it, and then LR to code it. the Westfalia lead is exactly the same lead you'll get from Land-Rover, the only difference is the socket cover has a land-rover logo on it rather than Westfalia - there's just no point buying the land-rover one.

http://www.pfjones.co.uk/

Email PF jones, i got my 13 pin westfalia kit from them for about £60. If i recall correctly i couldn't find the kit browsing on their website, but when i emailed them they sent me the link to the item.

I did program mine with the IID tool, but you're only telling the parking sensors you have a towbar kit fitted. I think if you don't tell the parking sensors one is fitted you'll probably just get them sounding when you reverse with a trailer attached. There's nothing about needing to tell the car you have a trailer socket apart from that.

You can install the Westfalia/Land-Rover kit yourself. The instructions can be downloaded from Land-Rover's topix site. It's dead easy to do. Basically just a case of removing some of the plastic and carpet trim from the boot.
