I have seen other people who have mistakenly or as a last resort tried a 'reset gearbox adaptions' and ended up having to replace the gearbox having killed it.
I think you said it had done 148k miles? Was that on the original box do you know? It's done well if it has.
I don't know if it can be recovered from an adaption reset if the gearbox is near the end of it's life, anyone know? Where's RRPhil!!!?

Just add, is the gearbox oil level correct? Needs to be hot to check though so that's a tough one to do now.

Cars done 185k and mechanic says its prob had a box change
Ive done 60k over last 5 years
I have got drive, reverse, neutral and park
When releasing from park thers a massive 'clunk' like wind up being released
Thinkn back iver the last 6 months or so it has been clunking from Park more and more.
I think ive ran oot of options.

What do you mean by "clunk from park" ?

When you move it into drive with your foot on the brake it clunks ?

Yes a big loud and jolting clunk.

It might be an unrelated issue to the tranny problems you're having .

Have a look underneath at your transmission mount bill ...

I had mine parked on an hill with an assistant going from p to d with her foot on the brake to check for engine movement as I suspected the mounts we're going bad .
(Vibration in D when at lights etc with foot brake on)
I only saw about 1/4" of movement backwards and nobody could tell me what was normal when I asked people online to replicate my test ...

However , when I looked at the transmission mount underneath it had massive movement !!
A bit like you'd expect to see the engine do on bad mounts .
When it went into drive I could see the shafts tension up , and the whole transmission/engine assembly went down about 1/2" .
When it was revved to approx 1500rpm it moved about another 1/2" (1" total movement) and the tranny appeared to be moving down that much it was not far off hitting the cradle !!

I'm getting a new mount complete with the big rubber washer either side installed in about 4 hours , so I can tell you what the outcome is and hopefully what kind of movement is normal on that mount .

Bear in mind excessive movement on one bad mout can over stress all other mounts , so I'll be doing the rest later this month .

Also bear in mind the electric brake releases on revs , so tell whoever is holding the brakes and revving to keep that left foot firmly planted

I put a new filter on the tranny about 6 months ago and have drained about 10 liters of zf out of it since then .
It's shifting smoother now , so my next step will be a new torque converter in the next 6 months .

Weil we have weighed up the options
Decided to get a new box
Altho the engine has done 185k miles she runs as sweet as a nut.
Everything cept the box is 100% i think.
So, at the mo a new box is on the cards and going to be sorting that oot in next few days

A quick chat and the gearbox guy gave a few possibilities so at least he was looking at the obvious faults as a starter instead of jist stating 'new box'

The cars no really cost me that much in last 5 1/2 yrs of owning it so be a shame to 'bin' it.
Oh, ive renewed the main fuel pump at £850. Other than that shes sound for a 'working' car.

Im not 100% sure that this is the way forward but weil see as shes going into 'hospital' Monday and all depends on his report

Anyways, update from gearbox 'hospital'

It appears to be the motor thingy on side of tranny box.

He used one from another Rangie and everything fired up and reset everything back to normal.

I suggested one from ebay or similar and quite rightly he said it could be ok or last a fee months

I am getting a new one, peace of mind.

So aboout £1000 and it could be sorted.

Now another question.................
My gearbox has done between 60000 and 185000 miles untouched.
Should I have the oil changed?
The gearbox specialist says that the oil is for life and disnae fail
Its the torque that fails and throws bits metal into the oil.
The oil disnae cause that

Good way of telling if your tc is on the way out.
Check drained oil, sump plug and filter for metal particles.
But no there not sealed for life.

Some auto manufacturers say they're sealed for life .
Zf who make the gearbox say it isn't ....

Bill has the gm box. But still the same, not sealed for life.

Weil ther we go.
Garage 'borrowed' a stepper motor thingy from another RR and all the bings and bongs gone.
Result as it was ae the gearbox
Supply and fit new motor
Oil and filter change in G'box
Oil change in Tranny
Labour
VAT
= £1080

Which given all the options I think was good.

So it has cost me in total
new alternator
Fitting
AA membership 🤐

£1400 😩

Car is going awsome.
Gears smoother and seems quieter
All the warning bings and bongs 'gone'
