I've not come across a flood in the RR yet but curious to know before I do, how deep will she cope with??? Bog standard 4.2 SC Any tips which mode to use etc???

Define 'safely'

Manual says 19.5" - but it really depends on experience & technique.

Slow in & smooth acceleration to create a bow wave - then keep going & stop for nothing (within reason)

Failure is generally caused by one of 2 things - air intake (underwater or filter soaked) or wet electrics

I would stick to what the manumaul says. They will go deeper, but you need to know what you are doing, I have pulled many a 4x4 owner (volvos mainly) who think that wading is a good idea, 9" of water will kill a regular car, I've had the Ff with water up to the top of the bumper, but that is as deep as I'd want to go and that was by accident!

The problem comes when you have to keep going forwards even though you have no idea how deep it is going to get. the local riverside road near me floods regularly, there is one deeper bit where everyone's car stops!

If you can find a way round that is the preferable approach. Wading seems fun until you have a bill for a new engine! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The brochure picture shows the limit just below the tops of the wheels (high suspension setting). If in doubt and equipped to do so, wade through yourself first. Some 405s have an extra called "wade sensing" which will tell the depth, but it would still be worth looking for potholes and similar which could suddenly drop a corner lower.

It is also important to consider the effect of current, you can get pushed along in a ford and so struggle to hold the route to the exit, in a way that would not happen in standing water. This was demonstrated at a ford I use occasionally when someone delivering a new stock trailer tackled the ford when the stream was in spate, the vehicle/trailer train was pushed downstream and the trailer was wedged under a footbridge downstream. 405s can go a bit deeper (90cm) due to higher air intakes, but they start to float at 100cm or so... Only Range Rovers since 1988

I use the gumboot test, if it goes over the top of my boots I don't risk it, apart from anything else I tend to stop when it gets to the soggy legs point and therefore don't know if it gets any deeper further on. letters not necessarily in the right order

This was mine, pre snorkel, this was just after the deepest bit, it was up the windscreen, it took a gulp of water in the inlet, soaked the maff and cut out... took several minutes for the water to be visible inside, there are numerous holes in the floor, big one where the handbrake cable goes.. The water got to just below the top of the door bins, filled the boot to just under the false floor, then the EAS pump cut in and as it was under water it started to fill the system with water...

It restarted ones I'd shaken the water off the maff... drove 240 miles home after finishing the day's laning..

If it comes over the bonnet and reaches the heater intake you get gallons through the heater into the footwells, I have a plastic mat to block this when wading now.. with the snorkel I have had it several inches up the windscreen, bonnet totally under and it's been fine... :thumbsup:

I've had it over the tops of the wheels several times, just under the clamshell bit of the bonnet once. Note I knew the track well but the seat only just stayed the same colour...

I now reserve such stupidity for the Defender . The downside is that that definitely does leak... Ed
