Any ideas what this could be?  Current stable:

I the coolant level OK?
No leaks at all?
No water near the bleed screw?


It could be something simple like air in the water pump. Porsche 911 (996)

I know what that is, it's a really short clip giving nobody a chance of helping you find out what it is !!

I will take a longer one but it’s soumds like a tappet do they go on these? If you rev it it goes faster - what’s the procedure for fixing? Thanks Current stable:

Try moving your phone around next to various parts of the engine rather than the wheel but the M62TUB44 engine that we both have is notorious for tapping.
Sometimes it is nothing more than a lifter that needs bleeding if the vehicle stands around a lot and this can be achieved by elevated revs for 2 minutes I think it is at something like 3000 rpm or I just take mine for a bit of sport mode driving.
HOWEVER, these engines also suffer from timing chain guide failure which isn't always fatal but the above procedure if it's the guides will most likely make it terminal.
They also suffer from vanos wear which normally manifests as start up rattle and then tapping when the engine is warm.
It could also be a lose spark plug or leaking exhaust manifold or even a failing torque converter depending on where the noise is coming from or even mechanical failure of one of the engine components or just low oil level or the wrong oil type or a failing oil pump or a blocked oil way or failing water pump ....
Or none of the above...
When did it start and is it present all the time ?

they also have VANOS as well I think, which is gubbings within the cylinder heads which is known for tapping too.

when was the last oil change. My old 4.4 BMW unit would tap on startup sometimes ... but I found it varied with oil life and temperature. V8 or else ...

Does it do when the engine is first started / cold?

It sounds like mine, mine starts off loud on startup and if I leave it to warm up it goes away.
If your oil is at the maximum level then I think like mine it is the hydraulic lifters, if you Google BMW M62 lifter noise or tapping or ticking the internet is a wash with videos and threads.
There is a procedure to bleed the tappets which may work providing everything else such as oil type - another mine field, is ok, however and it's a fairly big however, if the problem was timing chain guides then the procedure could kill the engine.

Timing chain guides failing is normally a harsh metal on metal sound and the bits of plastic guide end up in the sump so removing the lower sump is a fairly conclusive way to tell.

Vanos failing normally sounds like a loud start up rattle then a ticking noise once the engine gets warm.

Have a goigle and drive yourself insane with the rest of us.
