Thats how mine was spotted with oil in the coolant system i was expecting headgaskets and huge bills and my indy said no its quite a common problem . Its a bit like the gearbox flush most wont change the filter and as my guy said whats the point all new fluids and a crappy old filter and next job when we get back is the turbo oil feed mod bit as its not smoking i was told to leave for now |

I agree Nino, most oil coolers will not need replacing, but if you work out the time it took us to split the cooler, clean it all up, replace the gasket then reinstall it, the cost for main stealers time would probably exceed the cost of replacing a whole cooler.

Has anyone determined why the gaskets leak? Are the bolts not tight enough possibly due to being undersized, have been over-tightened resulting in a distorted cooler, the gasket material is unsuitable or due to some other reason? I'm not keen to be replacing gaskets every 3 years so am looking for a longer lasting fix.

I think I read the housing is plastic, could that be something to do with it? Temperatures perhaps?

I had my cooler gasket replaced by Rovertune in Reading for around £350 - it's 2.5 hours labour plus the gasket, and oil and coolant top-up as well. Dealers quoting around £1000 is strange.

LRDirect usually shows superseding part numbers if a component or gasket has been upgraded but none show for the cooler or the gaskets. However if a later version of the engine has different mountings or coolant or oil ways for a different cooler then the later cooler wouldn't be applicable to the earlier engines so not a superseding part. That the lower rubber style gasket sits totally within a groove with metal to metal clamping rather than clamped between faces allows the opportunity of the gasket being just thick enough to seal when new without any reserve as the gasket shrinks with age. However that doesn't explain why sometimes the middle gasket fails although I have not seen any pictures of that gasket as it was not initially available as a replacement part.

Yes. I bought the 3yo car with 19K kms 3 years ago and its now just over 80K kms, which is less PA than my usual travels of around 30K PA. |
