Cabin noise 4.4 TDV8

Hi all.

I'm a current RR Sport TDV8 owner looking to move to an L322 and have looked at a few 4.4 TDV8 L322 now and and feeling underwhelmed by them.
Of the 4 I've test driven now, they all seem to have quite a bit of engine noise coming through to the cabin and not the hushed driving experience I've been led to believe they have.
The last one, the youngest and least mileage of the lot had what sounded like an air leak coming from the drivers footwell area like there was some sound proofing missing, like a constant hiss.

The boot space, between the wheel arches is not as wide as the RR Sport which is disappointing as I use it for work and my kit fits perfectly across the L320 load area.

I'm not sure whether they've all been fuelled with cheap supermarket Diesel but they all sound rough and its putting me off.

Also, the 8 speed gearboxes I've been told shift so smoothly that the gear changes are almost imperceptible? That also seems far from the case unless I've driven 4 poorly maintained examples despite their full service and 1 owner histories.

Help!

8 speed has disappointed me TBH.

Noise-wise mine has a bit of an annoying drone but not that I noticed in the first 6 months. I think I just acclimatised to the cabin and then started to notice.

If you've driven four then you've given it a good go!

. Cheers, Greg

When test driving 4.4TDV8s my experience was similar. Two drove like tractors compared to my 3.6 TDV8 Sport but the one I finally bought confirmed the 8 speed box is a peach and the cabin is a place of hushed comfort until you give it the beans and it sounds better than my old 4.2SC Sport.

Thanks guys. I'm going to give it another week or so and see what happens.

Tbh, I'm still quite shocked after the test drives and I'm looking at my Sport in a new light, after all, I'll be potentially spending another £10k+ and seemingly for what?

Oddly, the best one was a 5 owner Westminster and was the only one that smelt of leather inside, it was just the number of owners that put me off. That one has since been sold.

I did drive a 3.6 a couple of years ago so I might start looking in that direction as well as I remembered that one being very good.

You also got a better V8 rumble from the 3.6 than the 4.4 although I'm not sure why that should be.

Onwards!

Personally I wouldn't be too bothered by the number of owners, its easy enough to rack it up quite quickly on premium cars - its not uncommon for Ferraris and Porsche's to have large numbers of owners - it doesn't necessarily mean its a problem car (a 3 year old Fiesta with 4 owners I would be asking questions!)

Think about it - demo for 6 months, or Landrover management car - new owner for a year, maybe 18 months. Another owner for 18months - 2 years each, non franchise dealer taking as trade in at 4 years old - then uses it as his run around for 6 months etc - given the youngest Westminster being 2012 so 7 years old now it could well have had a few. Also some owners buy premium cars and then decide they are too big, don't get used etc. My 2012 had had 4 owners when I bought it last January - service history was impeccable and car well looked after. Buy on condition!

As for the drone, they have been issues with window and door seals, windscreen trim on A pillar, roof rails pop out of the gutter and the wing mirrors had a service bulletin on them, so could be any number of issues - mine had a drone which I fixed by refitting the A pillar clips which had come loose. If its any consoloation my 2004 had a drone for about 10 months which I finally traced to the plastic trim on the lower passenger front wing. Current Fleet:-

Mine is always better when it’s had a decent run.

Might be a red herring, but I imagine those at dealers might not have been run for a bit or just shunted round.....

Obviously not the cause of all the issues you have found....

Hi Nicksaab.

Thanks for the info and very useful on the rattles and drones. The 5 owner car had its service book stamped with main dealer and specialist but no other paperwork for any work that had been done so I had no real idea if any serious cash had been spent on the usual problem areas.

By contrast, a couple that I'd made telephone enquires about had extensive documentation and detailed virtually every penny spent and they had both had some fairly major work.

The 62 plate mentioned with the least mileage just sounded plain harsh inside with a high pitched vibration or hiss. I might give them a call to see if there is anything obviously loose but I didn't want to take a £17.5k chance that it'll turn out to be nothing, or at least, something easily remedied.

I've got more to look at and will probably now include the 3.6 as well so lets see.

Cheers.

G

Hi mjdronfield.

It could be indeed a red herring but one had a constant rough vibration coming through the floor; prop shaft, gearbox, driveline but not a wheel out of balance. The dealer came out with me on the test drive and said he couldn't hear or feel anything which is the classic response! My 2009 RRS TDV8 felt like a Rolls Royce after that.

The one with the high pitched vibration or hiss might have been running on supermarket diesel which might account for it but it was something new that I'd not heard on one of these and I was surprised at just how intrusive and "un RR like" it was.

Back to the drawing board.

I went through the same process very recently, drove a couple of 4.4s and ended up picking up a late 59 plate 3.6 which was 4 owners. I was concerned about number owners but last keeper was 5 years and had receipts as well as service book, it drove really well and the interior was close to mint. Given the 3.6 was £2-3k cheaper than any of the 4.4s I'd considered I took the plunge and 3 weeks in am cautiously happy! The additional couple of grand might come in handy with keeping her operational at some point.

The 4.4s with that 8 speed box did seem to be cycling through the gears constantly around town and as a bit of a traditionalist I do prefer the stick shifter as opposed to that dial!

Hope you get a good one.

Just my own personal experience after almost two years in a 4.4 tdv8 after 2 years in a 3.6. The 3.6 was lovely and i would have another in a heartbeat BUT the 4.4 is much more refined on motorway journeys thanks to the 8 speed box and is not even turning over at 1500 revs at motorway speed which is a big contrast to the 3.6. The digital clocks on the 4.4 are also a huge improvement over the 3.6 and give the L322 a much more upto date look. I have never noticed the 8 speed box re changing gears ( its so silky you wouldn't know it had changed gears except for the rev counter) so I'm very surprised to hear people mention that as an issue. The adaptive suspension was quite noticable and made cornering briskly a bit more confidence inspiring.

Again , i really loved my 3.6 and only changed due to mileage.

All of the above is my humble opinion based on my 4.4 VSE which now has 140k miles on it. 2015 4.4 AB

Hi 8810bigcat.

Late plate 3.6's are definitely now on my radar and will have a look a a few. The price difference is staggering compared to what I have been bracing myself for and certainly the ones I've looked at I'd be about 4.5 - 5k more expensive and I'm really wondering if the other engine (4.4) and gearbox is really worth the difference?

I'll keep you posted!

I did exactly the same when looking and picked up a 2010 3.6 for £12k instead of buying a 2011 for around the £20k mark saving enough to buy an SLK280 for the summer 2010 3.6TDV8 Stornoway Grey/ Black interior - gone

Hi Drakes.

Ah, you guys are turning my head and I'm looking at more late 3.6 now!

dolph34

I agree that the motorway cruise and low rpm would be great thing but, I'd really need to see a 4.4 at a good price.
The 3.6 I've been looking at are the facelifted versions so 10 plate cars.

What do you get mpg wise on a run with your 4.4 out of curiosity?

Thanks.

You can get a reasonable 4.4 for 12k - it'll be 100k miles give or take.
£20k at this moment is top top end, very low miles one owner, autobiography spec etc.

. Cheers, Greg
