Transmission fault - some gears not available

Hello, I have a TDV8 56 plate. I get the message above on the dash (or something really similar). The car seems to get stuck in 3rd gear. I only noticed as the revs were high after the message. I was unable to manually shift up or down but pulling over, turning the engine off and this seems to clear the fault.

I've had a read of the forum but can anyone suggest what it might be and what I should do? Do I need a code reader? If so, which one? I would prefer a decent one as I know I will probably use it quite a bit but don't want to pay huge money.

A Trap

Yes a fault code reader is invaluable. Get the GAP IID BT, great support and lots of features including coding, logging and obviously fault code reading of of all modules.

Thanks. Do you have a link to one? From what I've looked for, are they around 500? Not sure I wanted to post that much though Big Cry

You won't be using the correct oil at 150 quid cost more likely to be 300 to 350

The iidbt is available from Dan at Duckworths for £405 and is well worth the expense. Saved me a good £250 so far in diagnostics and you can sell it on for a fair percentage of the initial cost.

Also search GAP on here, wiki entry and their website for more info. Cheers
Richard

This is my second car so don't really want to spend 400 on one just yet. Would the icarplay do the job? Has anyone used one?

Looks like transmission oil will be getting changed. I think I have an invoice from when I bought the car with it bing done about 6 months ago. Wondering if it was actually done and the correct oil used.
