Decided to replace the serpentine belt today, just to rule out the possibility of it slipping on the PS pump pully.

The ribs on the old belt were less than half the thickness of the new one and when laid out the old one was at least 3/4 of an inch shorter than the new OEM Dayco belt.

Got it all fitted up and bled the cooling system whilst refilling with a higher concentration of coolant this time.

Just been out driving for 2 hours round Manchester city centre and back again. Got to say, that's the best i think its ever driven.. really enjoyed it.

No low coolant warning either hurrah!

Well everything was going well for a few days following fitting the new aux belt... then the belt tensioner failed

So back together now with the new belt, new belt tensioner and all idler pulleys replaced. (Everything genuine Land Rover) and the steering is back to being heavy

Totally fed up now

I know this is an old post, but did you ever get to the bottom of the problem?

I'm, as you probably guessed, going through similar issues and doing all the research currently.

Hey Pawl, and everyone first of all thank you for having me here..

Im so frustrated right now I have the same problem with heavy steering when Idle i have to use full force to turn my steering wheels!

I have done as per below:

1)Replaced power assistance steering pump
2)Steering rack
3)Fully bleeded and replace new PAS fluid

I dont know exactly what is the servotronic and BCU you guys talking about as i am a new owner of my range since February this year and man Im telling you guys I have been fixing so much and driving it so little.. I am desperate for help in solving these problems but I cant figure out what is the problem.. And from my understanding Pawl said it shouldn't be the smaller electronics unit like BCU/Steering Angle Sensor etc.. and if it is then damn.. Im just tired of not having my car for the past few months and sent it to multiple workshops and its like all hope is lost..


Please share your latest experience with this model, solutions etc preferably with pictures or video of the source and solving the problem.. Thank you

The wires to my MY12's servotronic valve recently broke which made the steering heavy. No faults were displayed but a fault code was stored for the valve. The valve is located in the section of the rack where the steering column attaches, mounted on the outside. You should see it directly above the gaitor on the driver's end of the rack.
If the connector is attached, disconnecting it should make the steering heavier if the valve (transducer) is working. The valve controls oil flow to make the steering lighter when powered.

Thank you for the tips! I will write again if the steering making problems again.. for now its smooth as a butter 🧈 I can turn the wheels with 1 finger! Haha hopefully it stays like this 🙏

I hope your car steering remains OK
I know from my experience, it's really annoying & for me very frustrating (& embarassing) when I couldn't even park the car in narrow spaces

If it happens again, so that you can help us help you, can you describe the problem with your car in more detail ?
Eg : When the steering becomes heavy :
what vehicle speed(s),
what engine speed(s),
how much steering lock is being used,
is it the same turning left or right,
is the engine cold (ie just started) or warm
Is the heavy feeling immediately when you begin to turn the steering wheel or after you've begun to turn
