Spline repair brass ? Tip pls! SOLVED

Hi team,

RR unrelated, I've a shower valve with a brass shaft and a spline on the end to control it on and off.

The spline's worn and the brass cap that sits over no longer grips. The brass cap then takes a chrome handle so it needs to grip that shaft.

A quick check of encyclopedia YouTube and can't see an answer to this one.

The only option I am thinking is to file a flat section onto the knackered spline then drill and tap the brass cap that fits over it so a grub screw could drive in at right angles to the shaft.

Is there another way?

Many thanks. Cheers, Greg

I would be inclined to clean up the splined shaft and inside of the brass cap and then use araldite to glue the cap in place so that it is located correctly and solid. Then drill a 3mm día hole through the side of the cap passing through the shaft and out the other side. Then cut an M3 stainless steel bolt to the día of the brass cap removing the head end and push it into the hole and finally fit the handle over.
If the shaft día is sufficient you could use M4.

Like your thinking nicedayforit!

Except I can't glue the cap on -I'll need it removable to do anything to the valve behind.

But like the M3/4 pin idea, I think thad would be better than my grub screw plan.
Easier too. Thumbs Up

The other idea I had would be to cut a slot into the shaft end and the cap too, fit a horizontal key. Not sure about this though as the cap fixes with a screw. Maybe the key is a bad idea.

I like the pin idea Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Found a diagram, it's No 20 and 25:

 Cheers, Greg

How about cleaning up the splines and coating them with chemical metal, then putting the knob back on to take the pattern of the splines?

Put it all back together and let the chemical metal set before trying to use it.

I assume the manufacturer can't supply a replacement shaft?

Mike

Replace the shaft and valve. Unscrew it, and screw in a new one. They should be readily available at a plumbing supply store. Ron B. VK2OTC

Thanks Mike. Thumbs Up Hadn't thought of chemical metal. Just have to figure out how to fit the cap to hold the shaft, without it sticking. Maybe cling wrap.

And p38arover - I'm ordering a new valve with shaft but need something immediate.

. Cheers, Greg

I have the same unit as pictured, and also had the same problem, for the two days waiting for the part to arrive i just popped a small mole grip on the splines and operated it that way.

For temp fix, wrap the splines in PTFE tape or similar (plastic bag?) for a "press fit" .

Sorted till the part arrives!
You can see I'm cutting the masonry nail I put in.
Then a short screw into the shaft which nips onto the nail to keep it from drifting
Thanks all!

 Cheers, Greg
