Early L322 steering wheel gear paddle retro fit! Amazing!

I bought Zebedee's 2004 L322 a week ago, collected last Saturday night.

What a nice chap, tea was provided and we had a proper chat and handover Thumbs Up

The car is great, but the best thing is the steering wheel gear change paddles. I am quite amazed at how much they improve the drive. I always found that with the L322, if you wanted to overtake or induce kickdown, you really had to stab the pedal hard, and it wasn't quick enough to do so.

Now I just flick the paddle and its ready-the change is quick too, quicker than I thought. Then you just use them as required, and when finished, it automatically selects D again, after about 10 seconds. It transforms the car.

The "-" and "+" are even illuminated Bow down

I think this is a new upgrade for the early L322, but having used it, I would, without question, have it done to my car (if I didnt already have it Very Happy ).

As far as the Paddleshift/Command-shift modification is concerned, we've been working on prototypes for a number of months now. Your car was one of the ones used to develop it and make sure we've eliminated all the bugs. We've now got them fitted in the early cars, and the 2007-2010 model and all working fine. We've focused on making it an easy DIY plug-n-play fit. No wiring is cut and everything works as it should (even the heated steering wheel works as it should). It can be fitted in about an hour.

The first 25 kits are being manufactured as we speak and should be ready in the next couple of weeks. If anyone is interested, let me know.

So now you tell me, having spent hours in a cold garage soldering bits of wire here there and every where with hands not so steady any more (its an age thing) doing the wireless remote way with the bits I bought for the job when got the car two and half years ago (one of those round toit jobs) had I waited a little longer could have bought one of your kits Big Cry Best of luck with your kits, I have found it handy to have a little more control over the gears at times in slow moving traffic when every time it slows a little the box changes up when you lift your foot off the throttle and then have to touch the brakes just flick it down a gear or two and let the engine do the work.

Well having now driven a friends 14 plate rrsport and also another friends mondeo I like the way you can flick a paddle to change gear even in drive mode without moving into sport mode first, so @Zebedee I find myself interested in your kit also.

The first 25 kits have arrived from the manufacturer and are ready to be dispatched, and I'm just waiting for Martin to confirm its OK to offer them for sale on the Group Buy section.

The kit includes 2 electronic modules (a transmitter and a receiver) which go into the steering wheel and centre console respectively and plug into the existing wiring there, and fitting instructions. The kits can also be provided with or without the Land Rover paddles - I know some people have already got them and they are also available from places such as PowerfulUK and eBay.

This kit will fit all L322 Range Rovers from 2002-2010 and leave all existing features in place such as heated steering wheels. We believe it will work with all cars with Steptronic gearboxes and the ability to fit paddles, which include Range Rover Sport's, Discovery's BMW's Mercedes etc. but we've not tried them on those yet and some of the connection plugs may need changing.

The installation process is basically:
- Remove the airbag and steering wheel.
- Replace 2 of the steering wheel rear spokes with the LR paddles -
- Add the transmitter module to the airbag module by plugging the wires into the existing cabling, and replace the steering wheel/airbag.
- Open up the centre console area and add the receiver module between the existing wiring. Find a switched live to power the receiver module, fix a switch into position, and add an earth to the gear selector assembly. Then reassemble the centre console.
- Installation should take between 1 and 2 hours depending on whether you've done any parts of it before. If you live in the North West, we can provide a fitting service.

The kits provide control of the gear selection in exactly the same way as the current models Command Shift, with 2 modes:
- You can select Sport mode and then drive the car manually selecting gears using the paddles.
- You can leave the car in Auto mode and automatically select a gear by pulling on the paddles. The car will shift into Command mode and remain in Command mode for between 5 and 10 seconds (this is selectable) then will automatically revert to Auto mode. This is ideal for pre-selecting a lower gear for overtaking etc.

The gearbox electronics automatically protect the gearbox so wont allow you to select a gear incompatible with the revs.

PowerfulUK have bought one of the first kits and will be doing a video on how to install them. They also have videos on parts of the installation process - such as removing the steering wheel and adding the paddles.
