L405 Transfer Box Oil Change & Judder Bulletin Double Fl

The below wiki by EmiratesA380 is a good guide:
https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic44954.html

Whilst it is a thread about the L322 4.4 TDV8, the guidance is applicable to the L405 too:

A Hex bit socket will undo and enable you to torque the filler and drain plugs (22nm). New plugs and washers are advisable.

The LR branded oil is called Special Transfer Box Oil, IYK500010(pictured). Exactly 1.5 litres of your existing transfer box oil should drain out. 1.5 litres should be put back in.

From LR Parts Depts. Special Transfer Box Oil is about £46 for 2 litres (2 x 1L bottles). 2 new plugs & washers are about £8.00 in total.

Note the difference in colour between old and new oil Shocked

LTB00906v6 - Twin Speed Transfer Case Judder

Some owners might experience the below symptoms that are specified in a UK LTB.

The symptoms can occur before or after a transfer box oil change.

The LTB is:

" LTB00906v6 - Twin Speed Transfer Case Judder "

" A customer may express a concern that a judder is felt from underneath the vehicle when using steering input at low speeds, for example turning left or right at a junction. This technical bulletin has been updated due to a change to the warranty section, parts section, condition summary and service instruction. "

If you present your car to a LR Main Dealer with judder symptoms, they might suggest a transfer box double flush, road test and software update. Our car displayed these symptoms (3.0 TDv6). The procedure was recommended and resolved the issue. The LR Main Dealer applied no charge for the procedure.

The symptoms can be the subject of an LR warranty claim.

If LR AU Warranty declines the warranty claim, the MD can raise a case for LR to cover the cost via LR CRC.

I’ve just had this done on my SDV8, transformed the car as it felt like it was trying to pull a driveshaft out! Car is on 103k. Annoyingly had to go to a JLR specialist as I don’t have the software to allow me to do it myself but was a fairly reasonable £349.

Hello Mates,

My dealer is telling me that they only service the rear differential and transfer case on the L405 with this flush and fill. The front diff apparently has no service interval according to Land Rover. Is that true from what you guys know? Are you flushing the front diff as well?

Thanks!

John

You have been given incorrect information there, John. The service schedules are as follows:

Transfer box - every 5 years or 60k miles, whichever is first

Front and rear open diffs - every 10 years or 160k miles, whichever is first

If you have the optional electronic rear locking diff, the service schedule for this is every 5 years or 80k miles, whichever is first Kev

Kev,

Thank you! Yes that dealer information seemed pretty sketchy. I wonder about these guys sometimes.

Personally I would not leave the diffs for 10 years. I would be changing the oil every other year. It doesn't cost much or take too long but the peace of mind is well worth it.

I completely agree, Ivan. I replaced all of the fluids in mine when I got it and I'll be doing the same every couple of years to keep it all tip-top. Kev
