2003 power steering

Morning all

I've noticed my power steering seems to be somewhat of a hit n miss job most of the time. When your stationary the steering is pretty light n I can turn it with one finger lock to lock however while driving round town it becomes pretty heavy n needs at leas the whole grip from my hand to turn it.

I don't expect it to be really light steering as its a big old lump

Anyone got any suggestions please

Cheere

It could possibly be the servotronic valve on the rack is playing up, or may need a refresh of the power steering fluid, or a new pump.
Normally the steering is light at slow speeds and only firms up above 55mph. That's the function of the servotronic valve, so probably the first place I'd look.

Cheers mate. Soon as your moving it becomes pretty heavy even at 5mph so I'll give that servotronic valve a try. These easy to change or best left too a garage?

Try putting a separate 12v feed to the servotronic valve after disconnecting the normal loom connector (its best done with another connector as the pins are too fine to resist any misalignment).
If the steering remains light, the problem is not the servotronic valve, but probably in the BCM.
If it doesn't remain light, the servotronic valve is the problem.
The test could save you the cost of buying an un needed valve (more than a £100 nowadays) Paul,
