Rotary gear knob owners - help please

Does anyone know or could check - If you turn on the ignition but not start the engine, does the gearstick stand to attention or does it stay asleep?
I've only had mine for 4 years so you'd think I would know. I should probably pay more attention.

Thanks

Thanks, that was quick
So before I start barking up the wrong tree are you certain that it doesn't rise without the engine started?

Mine doesn't raise until the engine starts, if I press the start/stop button with my foot off the brake pedal, the dash lights up but the rotary gear selector stays down 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Thank you all, you’ve confirmed that mine does what it’s supposed to do, I had convinced myself that it should rise as soon as the ignition is on.
I’m chasing an intermittent starting fault and thought it could be linked to the gear selector.

What is your intermittent fault?

Our 2012 4.4 TDV8 is on it’s 3rd starter motor and hasn’t done 23k miles yet.

If you listen when you press the button you’ll hear a click as the solenoid tries to engage. If you do it with the door open it’ll be more audible. As it’s not even trying to crank it won’t store any fault codes either.

That’s interesting about 3 starters in 23K miles. Mine started with the classic occasional click and having to press the button a second time a few weeks ago but at 10 year old and over 100K miles I can’t complain. I bought a new Denso 1217 and fitted it a few days ago, all was well for a couple of days (and many starts) until it decided on Tuesday to not start no matter how many times I press the button.
Checked the obvious and decided to tow it home, I pulled the emergency Park release on the gearbox and it promptly burst into life so I drove home and used it several more times. Hence my question about the gear selector as I was now thinking the problem could have been related to the started inhibitor? Well it has now decided to become a static object again so my fault finding will start again when the rain stops.
Plan now is to check the engine/chassis earth lead and put a 12V supply direct to the solenoid trigger to prove the new starter before I look any further.

I've seen a thread on here about the cable from battery to starter being made up of 4 separate "bits". The person replaced it with one new lead.
Also another thread talked about a dirty main fuse which once cleaned cured the issues.
Use the Search function maybe with "starter+motor". 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

That's pretty much what I'm looking at by trying to eliminate problems, trouble is it has worked perfectly today so I can't find a problem that's not there.
I hate intermittent problems !

Looks like this might be a common problem. I just posted a question on the same subject a few minutes ago. Intermittent starter engaging. Mine is a 2011 322 with 75k miles.
