Reliable Rangey

Here’s a question…. which is the most reliable L322 Range Rover?

I’m assuming not TD6, not 3.6tdv8, which leaves;

V8 petrol 4.4
V8 petrol 4.2
V8 petrol 5.0
TDV8 4.4

Appreciate running costs will vary, but for time’not’ spent at the mechanics, which is the most robust?

I would think that asking that question on here, is akin to pulling the pin and throwing in a hand grenade to see what happens Rolling with laughter Some people can be quite opinionated Whistle

So far my Td6 has been quite reliable, now 15 years old and at around 95000 miles. BUT it does get lots of preventative maintenance, above and beyond any LR makers schedule. Yes I know I am tempting fate here.
There was a recent thread on here where one of the V8 models went passed the 333.333 miles, I suspect that the car involved had been very well looked after. But it must be a contender.
As to which one is the MOST reliable, best people to answer that would be the folks running various Indy LRRR specialists. Ask them which models they see the least off in their workshops. Their replies could be quite interesting Thumbs Up

I reckon the L322 TDV8 4.4 2012 Westminster Laughing though I might be a tad bias... but two and three quarter years of nearly non-stop heaven driving thus far with only one first cold snap (Dec 2020) after unused for 4-weeks' call out for a jump start in all the time owned...

Thumbs Up

My 3.6 TDV8 (2010 MY, so with the facelift) was pretty reliable. In 4 years the only issues were egr valve, fuel tank sender and low pressure diesel pump. Any of those things could happen with any make of car. Other than that, the car was utterly reliable with no issues on trim breaking, rust or electrical gremlins.

I remember reading that the 4.2's were the most reliable.

The 3.0 TD6 had a weak gearbox.
The 4.4 BMW V8 had a weak gearbox, timing chain issues and VANOS issues IIRC.
The 4.4 AJV8 was a great engine coupled to the 6 speed ZF but was sold in limited numbers so quiet rare.
The 4.2 AJV8 SC was also a great engine that didn't have very many issues. Again coupled to the 6 speed ZF.
The 3.6 TDV8 seems to suffer from EGR and turbo failure.
The 4.4 TDV8 you don't seem to read many issues with but ours is on it's 3rd starter motor in 23k miles. Also had an additional oil drain and EGR temp sensor fail which I believe are fairly common.
The 5.0 SC is a superb engine but early incarnations of it suffered with timing chain guides/tensioners wearing.

All of the above might be a load of crap but it's what I've picked up after we've owned a 3.6 TDV8, 4.4 TDV8, 2 x 4.2 SC's and a 5.0 SC in a Jag XFR as well as spending years on forums and reading on the internet.

The general rumour is that the 4.2s are bombproof!

So those before 2005 with lower tax are not all bad! That would fund some fuel for a v8 😀 or pay for the 4.4tdv8 for (relative) peace of mind!

England 2009 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

I added just over 100,000 miles to my petrol 4.4 V8 whilst I owned it and repaired / replaced quite a few things.
On fuel alone I spent approaching £40,000.
My 3.6 TDV8 would cost me about £26,000 in fuel to cover a similar mileage, therefore giving me an extra £14,000 to spend on repairs / maintenance.
Therefore I conclude that the 3.6 is the better option.
And that, my friends, is ‘Man Maths’ at its best Mr. Green 2017 Jaguar F Pace 25t Portfolio - still part of the JLR family 😀
2009 3.6 V8 (MY2010) - my first ever diesel! - now also gone Sad
2004 4.4 V8 Petrol Vogue - now gone

Perhaps that means TD6 is best of all given mpg/purchase price and that gearbox costs have come down 😀😂
