Adaptive Dynamics Fault

I've only had my Range Rover for a couple of weeks and already have my first issue. The Active Dynamics Fault message has appeared!
I have ready umpteen posts about the wires that go the sensors on the front struts being the issue but upon checking them it is clear these wires and connectors have already been replaced and the wires all look fine with no breaks in the them.
I have an iidtool so read the faults with that and the only fault present is ADCM-Active Damping C1A05-22 (AF) Rear left height sensor - General signal failure.

I was quite optimistic when I read this fault as changing a height sensor is a pretty straight forward and cheap job. I crawled under the car to take a look and the sensor looks pretty new. I unplugged it and gave the terminals a spray with WD40 just in case the contacts weren't great. That made no difference the error code remains.
I then looked at the live values of the sensor (using iidtool) and it looks to working fine. It has a static voltage of 3.2v and raises and lowers when the ride height is changed as expected.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can check? Having an error message on the dash makes my teeth itch.

I take it you have cleared the fault and it has returned..? Pete

My guess would be a cheap pattern sensor or a new faulty one...!!

Did you test the other side with the same movement, maybe it's working but not as it should...

I take it that it hasn't flipped over as they do sometimes when jacking up or it's been fitted wrongly... Pete

I’ll bring up the live values of all 4 sensors and see if there is any discrepancies and report my findings.

The height sensors on these vehicles are 2 height sensors in 1. If the height sensor isn't for a vehicle with adaptive dynamics then it won't have the 2nd output. Live suspension heights mean nothing as the L322 height signals aren't used by the adaptive dynamics module.

The height sensor must have 6 pins in the connector so if only 3 then it's the wrong sensor.

It’s definitely the right type of sensor because the fault only came on a few days after I got the car.
Is there any other sensor values I can read to check for a faulty sensor?

The fault code and description is proof that the sensor or the wiring to it is faulty. As the 2 rear sensors are the same, either swap left and right sensors to see if the fault swaps sides which would prove that the sensor is faulty or buy a new sensor. Electromechanical devices such as the height sensors are generally reliable but an electronic component can fail after only a short while.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn’t realised that the left and right sensors can be swapped side to side.
As tonight was a nice night I decided to give it a go. I was fearing removing the 13mm nuts but they came off without too much of a struggle. As did the 1st bolt at the sensor end of the arm the other didn’t though and I felt the head strip. It is a T25 head and even though I had the correct size torx bit in the head it didn’t take much force before I felt it slip. It’s in such an awkward place too that I have no idea how I’m going to remove it. I guess this is now a job for a garage. Doh!

Can you hammer in a T27...??

Or get one of these on it....

I do have a T27 so will try hammering it in tomorrow night (already cleaned all the crud from my eyes and hair tonight).

So I tried a T27 bit but there was no way it was going to fit. Nor could I find anything else that might help and there is not enough room to get anything to grip it. I’m going to book it in with my local mechanic. I also noticed a clicking noise from the front left wheel while turning right so I think it may be a cv joint needing replaced too.
I always knew there would be a few things needing sorted when I bought it (as with most older cars) but hopefully once these issues have been addressed I can start spending on more fun stuff.

You are on the right track. My issues started with the three amigoes and notchy gear changes. Started by looking at sensors - but turned out to be rotten hub ends where reluctor rings fit. Got some good ones from a breakers and few months back and re cycled oe sensors. B---ds to get out, loads of Plus Gas and gentle efforts to remove. I found that very gentle side to side twisting ( not pulling) eventually pursuaded them to come out. I fitted Delphi ones at first but nfg. ----------------

meant to say - Dremeled the torx heads off first - ebemn if you get them out the actusl sensor is very unlikely to surrender. They get rusted in tight. Terrible design imo. Loads if garages dont use the grease packs properly and that really help too Evil or Very Mad ----------------

Just to close this off. I finally got round to taking the car to my local mechanic who replaced the rear sensor for (I had bought a genuine replacement). The fault hasn’t returned so it looks like it was just a dodgy sensor after all. I was only charged £45 labour for the job. Wish I went straight there rather than mess about for hours trying to remove a rounded off bolt myself.
