Range Rover L322 quite a shine you have there! Thumbs Up

Bit of a side question, how do you remove the panel at the bottom of the wing?

. Cheers, Greg

Our cars should have been made to lower upon demand much further than they do, this would have negated the need for unsightly fixed sidesteps or indeed expensive complex deployable ones, poor forward thinking by Land Rover. This chap is really helpful... to remove that panel pull out the bottom then there's an 8mm hex head self tapping screw pointing upwards at the front side. Hard to get to, this video explains all.

took my side steps off yesterday as they were collapsing, four of the small 10mm bolts broke off so if I want to fit new steps I have to find a way of drilling out holes and retapping. No space due to air suspension tank.
Has anyone managed to drill out rusted bolts ?
Also how do the sill protectors come off, do I just take out plastic clips at bottom and pull off. Thought I would check all areas for rust just in case.

Rog21. One of my 13mm bolts sheared. I don't have welding gear at home so I took it to a local welder who welded a nut onto the stub and got it out. That should work for you as it doesn't require drill space or re-tapping.
Until then WD40 it every day!...

I put new 10mm nuts on all 8 - getting them in past the air tank was not a problem.

If only it was that easy. The 13mm broke leaving no exposed thread, that's fine as I can drill out.

The 10mm also left no thread exposed so nothing to weld to. I am looking at investing in a 90 degree drill attachment to see if I can drill them out. I may have to remove air tank (after releasing pressure) to get to it.

I had to drill out and retap the two front 10mm bolts on each side. I used a right angle drill. On the air tank side I reasoned that if the holes weren't exactly square to the chassis a) it wouldn't affect the mechanical strength or function of the fixing, and b) it would make retapping the thread a lot easier. So it proved. My biggest problem was blunt drill bits. Must get a drill sharpener!
I think my side steps were fitted to the car when new and the nearside one bent down at the rear when my son got in. Turned out both sides were riddled with rust. Replaced with aftermarket 'oem' ones - a discounted offer from Dan at Duckworths. Spray coated both new ones with waxoyl underneath before fitting and used stainless 10mm bolts. Kept original front mudflaps. All good. Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Unless you need steps to get in n out, why bother with em? They are ugly dirt collectors inho. Despite people's best efforts they WILL corrode, they all seem to be made of cheap mild steel, dunno if deployable ones are better regarding corrosion? Considering the price I'd hope so, I've no regrets about scrapping my old steps, Im fortunate i can get in and out without dragging the seat bolster excessively. 2008 L322 Vogue 3.6 TDV8 in Java Black with parchment and Navy interior. 125000mls.

Mounting points are completely different - I checked with my mate's Disco 3, which (I am fairly sure) shares the same platform

Yes aftermarket are basically the same however, when I got a pair on my old RR, there were a few quality check issues from the factory - one of the side steps was warped and hung slightly low. And, the bolt holes didn't exactly like up and were around 3mm off in places - not much but enough of a pain to have had to re-drill the holes larger in order for the bolts to fit the chassis.

So, if you get a pair and no quality issues, I'd say there's not really any difference to the genuine ones which are fitted on my current RR. The receipt from LR main dealer says they cost £1,100 for both side steps, mudflaps, fitting and VAT... but that was many moons ago so, I'd imagine more like £1,300 today. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
