Ref. the hoses - it'll be smarting now but once you've fitted them, you'll be glad you replaced them!
The plastic dye is a good idea, does it 'dry' to a particular finish at all?

2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

Mudflaps I’d do in a heartbeat and then I’d seal them with a wax afterwards.

I’ve done P38 door handles with it.

Door pillars I’d not use it on as they’re a totally different kind of finish.

If it’s the black door pillar trim that runs up vertically between the front and back doors then you can change them for around £50. Mine look fairly scruffy so I’ve got a pair of brand new ones here to fit. I need the windows down to fit them so can’t do it until I’ve got the battery back on now.

The last pile of parts from Duckworths arrived today.

Over £350 in rubber hoses

The big one with the aluminium bracket on it is made by gates. In an LR bag it costs £320… in a Gates bag it costs £100 + VAT… I was happy to forgo the Land Rover bag on this occasion!

The other 2 pipes are coolant pipes that run along the bulkhead. Combined cost of them was £237! For 2 rubber pipes… Thankfully the chunky coolant elbow was only 8 quid.

There is an o-ring at the bottom of the oil filler neck and one on the filler cap that are only available if you buy the whole assembly!

I gave the cams in the NS cylinder head a good coating of assembly lube, I then fitted the new oil seals to the valve covers and then fitted it back to the cylinder head.

I then fitted the new gaskets to the rails that the injectors mount to, and then fitted these to the heads and torqued the bolts down.

I then got the freshly refurbished injectors out of the box and fitted these. (Note to self, 1-4 are on the OS bank with 1 at the front, 5-8 are on the NS bank with 5 at the front).

I then refitted the fuel rail.

When fitted the injector wiring loom back to the injectors I noticed that the plug is broken on the injector on cylinder 1 so it doesn’t click into place. Thankfully, all of the others are fine. Thankfully, the injector wiring loom is separate from the main engine wiring loom, however, it’s £100!

My brother in law has a Supercharged RR Sport and he has a spare engine wiring loom. He’s cut a plug off it to make an injector tester so he’s going to cut another plug off it and send it here so I can repair mine. I’ll release the pins from the plug and fit them into the replacement rather then cutting and joining the wires though.

By this point there wasn’t much more I could do on the top so I refitted everything to the front of the engine.

The main belt is now refitted and the tensioner and idler for the Supercharger belt are now bolted back on too.

Once the Supercharger is refitted I can get the other belt on then too.

When I dismantled mine the knock sensor plug was swinging in the breeze. I need to figure out where it’s meant to be attached to as there’s a couple of options.

As of this evening, this is all that’s left in the pile of bits to be refitted.

The Supercharger, charger coolers air intake at the back.

From the cylinder head gaskets, right up to the top of this engine, there isn’t a single gasket on this car that hasn’t been replaced so I’m hoping and praying there’s no air leaks after all this work now!

Hats off to you David - another leap forwards and you're on the home straight. Really looking forward to seeing it turn over. Maybe a celebratory video which could be posted ? Cant believe (well I can, its LR after all!!) the price of those hoses... nothing but a rip off. Gavin

I keep changing my mind with the first start video... Yea it'd be cool to see it burst into life again after I've done all of the work and after all of these posts then sharing it would be nice for you guys...

However - if I've screwed something up then plausible deniability always exists if there's no proof.

Stream it live David, we'll all have our fingers crossed for you, I remember the first time I changed a timing belt which as we all know is NOWHERE NEAR to what you have done, and that was worrying enough.

The first timing belt I ever did was on my XM V6. It's a quad cam V6 so nothing like jumping straight in at the deep end!

When I'd got it all back together my heart sank as it cranked for ages before starting. Thankfully I realised I'd have the fuel lines off it for access so it was building fuel pressure again but I think the world fell out of my backside for what felt like the 10 minutes it was cranking. (It was more like 10 seconds).

I've got an oil and filter change to do on it firstly, then I'm going to pull the fuel pump relay (need to try and find it) and spin it over without the plugs in so that it can shift oil and build some oil pressure before putting any load on it.

I'll then refit the plugs and coils and suck it up and see I reckon.

Hopefully on Friday evening she'll be running!

Don't rush it, if something seems wrong, it probably is.
Make sure the fuel is up to the rails, as you already mentioned, the oil is where it should be - and not where it shouldn't, use a parallel battery rather than a starter/charger etc. etc. - in short, all the things you'd advise someone else to do.

Above all, enjoy the fruits of your labour!.

Well, what can I say...

The injector loom my brother in law sent me arrived this morning so this evening I removed a plug from it and fitted it to my loom. I managed to release the pins from it and swap it over rather then cutting and soldering so that avoided adding joins to the wiring loom.

After that the charge coolers on both sides were installed and the supercharger was tucked in the middle.

After that the coolant manifold was fitted and all of the hoses put back into the right place.

After that the supercharger outlet was added and the new bellows connecting it to the charge cooler were installed.

The aluminium intake pipe was then reconnected, missing hose clips were replaced with cable ties until I can get them ordered and the wiring loom was clipped into place.

It was then time to add oil to the engine! 8 litres of Smith & Allan 5w30 Fully Synthetic were poured down her neck. Interestingly the oil filter for the 4.2 Supercharged is much smaller then the one for the old 4.6 P38.

I then mixed some Smith & Allan OAT anti freeze into a 50/50 mixture and started to top it up. As I was filling it I was also blowing down it with the bleed screws open to force the coolant around the system. After adding 10 litres of coolant I asked my Dad to sit in the car whilst I stood up front with my phone.

There's no plugs or coils fitted at this point. We flicked the key so that it carried out its own starting procedure for its set length of time. I couldn't find the fuel pump relay mentioned on either fuse box or in the workshop manual so I left it connected thinking at least it would let it bring fuel up to the rail whilst cranking. I only video'd the process once but we repeated it twice to get the oil moving around.

After that I installed the 8 new spark plugs, refitted the 8 coils, installed the air box and connected the air intake as the car goes nuts if the MAF is unplugged. Dad climbed back in the car as I got the phone ready again... I was hesitant to video the first start but figured if it went badly I'd just not post it. 😂

Anyway... this happened!!!!

She started instantly with a tiny hiccup to start with. The knocking noise that you can hear for the first few seconds is the supercharger. It was making a similar noise prior to being rebuilt. It subsided after a few seconds and the supercharger became whisper quiet so I can only assume that the oil was getting around it again after it being stripped, cleaned and rebuilt.

I didn't have a 50p with flat sides in my pocket but I did have a quid so this happened next...

The car was idling on the ramp for around an hour tonight and it was as smooth as silk and soooooooooo sweet. This car hasn't run as well as this since I've had it.

Giving it a few revs after it had warmed through saw the Supercharger whine nicely too. The revs on this car have never picked up as quickly and as smoothly as they are doing tonight.

I then put the coil covers on and left it to cool down overnight.

Not gonna lie... I'm quite proud of myself tonight. This is the biggest project I've ever undertaken on a car. I've learnt everything I know about them through watching my Dad who watched his Dad. I've got a degree in Computer Networking and most of my colleagues look at me like I've grown horns when I tell them I've rebuilt the top end of the engine on my Range Rover. 😂

Few jobs to tidy up tomorrow such as the fan shroud and the air suspension compressor in the boot. Other then that, we're on the home straight now!
