2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

The seal kit for the gearbox arrived in the post yesterday and the solenoids from RRPhil arrived today so this evening I set to work.

I drained the oil out of the gearbox and whilst having a peek noticed that someone has been in there before. It’s easy to tell when they leave a bolt out!

Anyway, I stripped the valve block out and replaced the bridge seal, the 4 round tubes and then set about swapping out the EDS2 solenoid.

After that was done and the valve block was reinstalled I fitted the new electrical sleeve. The one I took out was date stamped 0112 so it’s obviously the original to the car.

The oil I drained out still looked brown when you shone a torch through it as it was draining but when in the bucket it looked awful and I couldn’t bring myself to put it back in so it’s filled with fresh oil tonight.

New oil v old oil.

I then took the car for a run and before I’d even got to the motorway it felt like a different gearbox. Once on the motorway it locked up perfectly and the revs were stable again.

Here’s what the IID tool is showing now.

I’m going to order a set of ZF solenoids and a genuine service kit for it and get them swapped over the Christmas holidays. I can then return Phil’s solenoid in case anyone else needs his help.

A massive thanks goes out to Phil for assisting with this. His help and knowledge have been a fantastic support.

Excellent news David - I've been following this as I'm going to service the gearbox on my SC next year when the weather warms up - allbeit the HP6.

It’s a 6HP in this one too being the 5.0.

The 4.2 has the 6HP26 whereas the 5.0 has the 6HP28.

Not wishing to over-complicate things, but I thought it might be worthwhile me pointing out the following:

Each solenoid has its own damper/accumulator, which consists of a metal piston and a rubber spring. In my experience, when an EDS solenoid goes faulty, this results in the rubber spring of its damper getting hammered, to the point where the squashed spring no longer functions correctly.

The dampers (ZF p/n 1068 227 039) cost around a fiver each (you need seven, as there are seven solenoids) and, unfortunately, to get at them you need to split the two halves of the valve body assembly.

Between the two halves is sandwiched an intermediate sheet or plate, which is printed with sealant, and invariably this sealant fails (peels off) when the housing & cover are separated, requiring a new intermediate sheet to be fitted. The sheet (ZF p/n 1068 227 063) costs around £85. Note that the E-shift versions of the 6HP28 use a different intermediate sheet (1068 227 065), so it’s important to ensure the correct ‘063’ one is sourced for the Range Rover M-shift Mechatronic.

If possible, when the valve body is split you should lift the housing (the thicker piece which houses the solenoids) off the plate because the plate also contains 8 check balls, a rocker valve, a filter and 4 check valves. Care is needed to ensure that these fiddly pieces don’t end up on the floor and get lost.

Sonnax produce a Zip Kit for the 6HP28 Mechatronic, which replaces the rubber-sprung dampers with ones with steel springs, which is another alternative.

Sounds like it’s worth stripping the valve block down when I go back in there to do the solenoids then.

Part of me thinks that the ZF parts have lasted this long, it’s probably not worth going down the route of the Sonnax kit.

I reckon my shopping list for Sussex Autos will be:

Service Kit (Sump, oil, bolts)
Solenoid Set
7 Dampers
Intermediate Plate

Hopefully it’s a fairly straight forward process to rebuild it once it’s back on the bench!

Is it worth sending the block away to be pressure tested once it’s done or just refitting it and clearing the adaptions?

I don’t think that pressure testing should be necessary. Unlike with (say) the earlier GM 5L40-E transmission, the 6HP valve blocks don’t have a reputation for wear & subsequent leakage. Just faulty solenoids and dampers!

I recognise that the expense is mounting up, but clearly this process is still a lot less expensive and time consuming than having to take the transmission out and replace the torque converter

Right, the parts are all ordered.

ZF Filter/Sump from Duckworths - £80

ZF parts from Sussex Autos:

Dampers were £5.26 + VAT
Intermediate plate was £68.73 + VAT
Solenoids were £229.27 + VAT

Total - £401.78

Smith and Allan Lifeguard 6 Oil - £70 inc VAT

All in its costing just under £600 to hopefully sort the gearbox once and for all.

There’s an extra bag in the solenoid set which contains a green and black solenoid along with what looks like a brass plunger but I don’t recognise these as being for my gearbox:
