Thanks Super Sloth not quite as tidy as it looks, I need to address the rust on the offside but easiliy the best car I've owned.

Following on from my previous post the error code P0420 has returned so connected my IIDtool which promptly failed to find the engine ECU, checked with my Icarsoft reader and all is well so I updated the IIDtool and rechecked only to get this constantly rotating screen on the app. Needless to say the ignition was on.

Nice work on wiring up the new socket.

GAP are really excellent at support. My IID tool would read codes from the 5.0 but wouldn't display any of the live values. I pinged an email to GAP who sent me a firmware update for my tool which contained a new flash for the engine ECU. Once I'd applied it everything worked perfectly.

Hopefully they come back to you with a resolution quickly.

Finally got around to updating my post.

Early on this summer I decided that I really wanted my A/C working so purchased a diy kit from ebay consisting of hose and pressure gauge, 2 cans of gas and a can of sealer for less than £80. A straightforward job to do and I have a spare cylinder should it leak in the future.

The next task was drilling out the 3 snapped 6mm screws from when I removed the side steps. There is little room to get a drill and bit in place, so I used an air 90o drill and managed to drill out to 4.5mm in steps from 2mm trying to remove the screws using stud extractors but unfortunately they failed to move.

I should add that I had to buy an expensive set of cobalt drill bits as nothing I had would touch the broken screws.

Couldn’t get a 5mm drill in the gap so I cut 20mm from the shank to shorten it. If you try to do this when you tighten the chuck make sure it grips the shank and not the fluted section. I’ll let you guess how I know!

1 captive nut fell off inside the cill so out with the clinch nut kit. I needed to drill a 9mm hole for the clinch nut so I had to buy a step drill as none of mine had a 9mm option.
So, the easy bit hanging the steps, you would think, maybe because I was doing this by myself it was very tricky, especially as I assumed that the slotted screw holes in the vertical hangers of the steps would allow me to fit all 4 screws and then to slide the steps on before tightening. I couldn’t find the movement to make this happen, so I propped the step on my chest added 1 screw and then lifted the steps to add a screw to the other end. I added enough Loctite to ensure the threads were completely covered to help against future rusting.

I need to fit the front mud flap but test fitting shows that a soak in hot water will help to position it correctly. I will then post some pictures.

Next task is to replace the coolant tank as I have had enough of the warning message.

When buying the tank I added the two camshaft position sensors to the list without first checking how easy replacement is. I now know that I have to remove the throttle body to get at them. Unless anyone knows better?

Whilst under the car I noticed that the offside step needs replacing so out with the plus gas as often as I can before starting the job.

Another item I had to replace was one of the reg plate lamps, found during the MOT apparently not a failure because there are two of them, Fist time I have had a "Pass with Defects"
I know these are on the check sequence of the LCM so didn't know that a lamp was out.

On checking I found that the LED lamp had failed but in such a way that the LCM had not noticed. So just because you have no message it doesn't mean your lamp is working.
So back to manual checking for those.

Next job the expansion tank. Tomorrow I hope.
Also I have decided that I will replace the step mounting screws with stainless so they are on order.

Fitted the expansion tank, a surprisingly easy job.

Clamped top and bottom hoses




undid the two screws holding the tank in position, but as usual the screws were badly rusted and took 1/2 hour to remove, I really did not want them to snap.
I applied Vaseline to the mounting spigot and the u shaped bracket as well as the hose inlet and outlet.
The new tank was easily slid into place and secured with stainless screws.

A job made easy by using some new tools purchased for this job.



I especially liked the hose clip pliers, I have got away for years using standard pliers which often slip off at the wrong moment, but these work really well.

First an under bonnet shot, all SC owners will recognise this and yes the engine cover is missing.


Here is a shot to show the difference between old and new. The only worrying thing is that this is after only 15k miles so I intend to do this again at the next engine oil service in about 5k miles.




Getting the plug back into place was very difficult, I asked my wife to give it a go as she has small hands, but that didn't work and as my hands were too big to get access, I removed the bolt holding the front of the Throttle Body Intake down and as it has a rubber collar at the Throttle body end I was able to lift it enough to get my hand in to insert the plug. Otherwise I would have removed the Throttle Body Intake, an easy job but you need to remove the Plenum Chamber to do so.

So an easy job made difficult by access issues Personally I would change every 20k not 50k as others including the oil suppliers recommendation of 50k, the cost compared to a rebuild/replacement of the supercharger makes it a no brainer!

I'd guess so, but changed my oil on the sc and wish I'd never bothered tbh 130000m clean as a whistle and a pain in the arse to change, you must take off the throttle body intake to make it easier....
Ime the oil will last until the car dies unless something else is going on....

I cant answer regarding the 5.0, Dhalworth would be able to help as he has owned both.

I still think that it pays to change the oil regularly my next service is about due and the sc oil is definitely on the to do list, its cheap to do and now that I know how to get the plug back in without dismantling everything its a straight forward job to add to a normal service.
