New to me L405 4.4 errors

Anyone have any experience of these on a 2018 4.4?

P0401-00 Exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient
I’ve read Ajmngn post on the l322 error I guess it’s the same for the L405?

Thanks Stan, any idea how it comes off? Is it the same on a 2018 (as earlier models) just thinking mine has the different layout with two screens? 1972 Series 3 full of character

as far as i can see its the same...held in by clips and pulls off...theres a little fan thingy in there that gets clogged up with dust etc.

if cleaning it doesnt work then replace.

this should help,

Little fan replaced, error gone!

Still investigating the EGR restricted flow error
Does anyone know where the ‘exhaust gas Recirculation electric actuator’ is on a 2018 I’ve looked in the area shown on Ajmngn post -
https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic63391.html
But can find it, found a boost pressure control valve, is it anywhere near that??
Also found the electrical diagram for it in the 2017 WSM (guess it’s the same for the 2018?) which shows an approx distance from the ECM of 1870mm but I’m not even sure where the ECM is Embarassed
Any help or info greatly appreciated! 1972 Series 3 full of character

Been following the trouble shoot guidance-
- Intake air system, low pressure boost leak
- Exhaust gas recirculation actuator circuit short circuit to ground, high resistance, open circuit, disconnected
- Exhaust gas recirculation actuator failure

Ive no other fault codes for boost pressure / intake leak (Icarsoft)
Found the solenoid for the actuator, front left of the engine fairly well hidden, Tested the vacuum pipe and I could hear the vacuum escaping at the back of the engine, stripped everything down and ended up changing the actuator on the EGR as it was full of oil from the previously leaking cooler/ turbo feed pipe and the vacuum pipe was also a poor fit, fixed that pulled a vacuum and all was well, Problem solved I thought….. however I’m still getting the error
Does anyone know if there’s what I would call a ‘functional description or cause and effect’ document that shows where / how the flow through the EGR is measured and what the parameters are? Although I’ve yet to check the voltage / operation of the solenoid for the actuator im wondering if a sensor is on its way out?!? The MAP is showing a constant 98kp with the engine off at tickover or changing the revs
I’ve also got exhaust gas temp bank 1 sensor 2 showing 0 degrees c, which doesn’t sound correct
Again no other codes on the Icarsoft that I think are related, Wondering if I’m on a red herring with the fault code and it’s a knock on from a sensor somewhere that’s failing and not registered a fault yet???
All thoughts and input greatfully received!!

From the back of my mind:

I think that when the egr opens up, the system closes down the throttle body slightly, restricting air flow into the plenum and causing a pressure drop ( I presume to the plenum). This pressure drop I think helps suck exhaust gas through the egr and back into the plenum.

I have it in my mind that that its for this reason that you can’t just simply blank off the egr pipe feeding the intake as a method of disabling the egr on the more modern Euro 5/6 engines as the system can sense that when it closes down the throttle as part of the egr process it isn’t getting a matching pressure response due to the pipe being blanked.

So this would imply that for the egr flow a ton of stuff is monitored. Throttle , pressure before and after the throttle body, all the egr actuators, temp and exhaust gas etc V8 or else ...

Thanks Fisha it’s hard to know where to start as I don’t know what a healthy reading is.
The 2.0 ingenium gets this error when the DPF is knackered, the natural restriction of the DPF causes flow through the EGR, no restriction no flow hence the error, my exhaust tips aren’t sooty so I’m hoping mine is ok
Ill try find the DPF readings on the Icarsoft later but think I’ll have to get it in for some professional diagnostics 1972 Series 3 full of character

Has some professional diagnostics carried out, EGR is capable of dropping the MAF reading however the actual and expected readings are inconsistent- suspected sticking EGR valve
There is an option to MAP it out without causing any DPF issues

I’ve decided (maybe foolishly) to change the EGR and clean the cooler out at the same time
So far it’s going well apart from some brittle pipe connections, I have hit one problem….im struggling to get the sideways bolts out of the cross over pipe bracket that go into the EGR, I can get a socket on but there’s not enough room to turn it, the crossover pipe stops an extension bar being of use and using it with a wobble / knuckle joint has proved fruitless.
Anyone know of a decent ‘short movement’ ratchet or have experience of getting them out?

Why not a spanner with another extension spanner on the end of it ? V8 or else ...

The spanner / Ratchet has to come off at an angle to miss the crossover pipe and ends up hard against the bulkhead, now considering cutting a spanner down or maybe a stubby Ratchet?? 1972 Series 3 full of character

Got there eventually! Amazing what you can do with a cheap ratchet from the local hardware shop!
I think I buy something every time I work on the Fullfat Rolling with laughter

It’s off….. bit messy, cooler and EGR dont look too bad, start putting it back together in the morning once the coolers been cleaned

Anyone know if the oil and gunk under the oil/Egr cooler is ‘acceptable’ or do I have another issue?

Well all went back together and I was fault free for a while Big Cry
I’ve now done a DIY smoke test on the intake, EGRcooler and crossover pipe with out finding any issues, removed the 12v actuator switch for the cooler bypass all appears fine switched ok with 12v applied. In desperation I tried a different MAF sensor from a fiesta but again no joy, I’ve also added some rags into the bonnet where the intake is as I could hear it drawing air on acceleration again no change but it does take a while longer to register 3 failures and put the EML on, maybe I’ve disturbed some thing doing the smoke test. Who knows! 1972 Series 3 full of character
