I know you've mentioned the fuel rail pressure drop, which leads you to think it's got a dripping injector, which would cause nearly all of your symptoms (except I'd expect the smoke to clear shortly after start-up as the excess fuel in the cylinder is burnt off).

Yes. I've got a similar issue with my 4.4... I've noticed that under certain conditions it smokes quite heavily then clears. It seems to be a mixture of blue, but mostly white "smoke" which I can't determine between steam and smoke. It seems to be that if it's been sat idling for a while, then I drive away, after a while it'll start doing it. If I don't idle it, it doesn't seem to do it... It doesn't idle rough, there's a slight "rattle" only heard from inside the cabin which we've put down to a small amount of chain slap but that's it. |

Strobe84 - That'll be your secondary turbo. Oil builds up in it as they idle or are driven gently and when you put your foot down and spool up the 2nd turbo it clears the oil as smoke.

I'm pretty certain I didn't spool the second turbo and it was still doing it. Also... Why white? Oil burn should be blue, no? |

No, oil burn is typically white. Used to be an easy way to tell if the timing on the older diesel engines was on its way out ... it would puff white.

Generally when engines burn oil, the smoke colour produced is regarded as grey or blue/grey. Not white.

Confirm that the drain valve in the bottom of the oil filter housing is complete and in place, because if not then the oil drains to the crankcase ventilation separator which cannot handle the oil flow so spits it into the primary turbo inlet tract giving the impression of a blown turbo oil seal. When I replied to your helpful post I wasn't certain where this valve was located. In fact it's at the base of the oil filter which is also part of the oil cooler. The issue is we replaced the oil cooler with a new Nissans oil cooler unit so oil cooler, oil filter carrier and the drain valve are all brand new. Grasping at straws I'll try to get it checked over the weekend but am sadly doubtful. Damn, I was getting really excited at the thought it might not be the turbo. Come on surely someone has replaced the primary turbo on a 4.4 TDV8. Help please by sharing your experience of what the job was like to do along with any tips or shortcuts. Rehab is for quitters!!!
