I need to get a new car, logic tells me it has to be the new model, L460, but looking on Autotrader a 2021 L405 is about half the price of a 2022 L460 thats £50k v £100k don't get me wrong its not the affordability that bothers me but will I be getting VFM with an L460? Geoff |

For me, the law of diminishing marginal utility applies. I could afford it but I couldn't justify it to myself.

The Ingenium 3.0L was only available in the MY21.5 L405. Mine has more than enough aids for my liking but most can be permanently switched off or to a low level, although it took a Gap tool to avoid having to switch off stop-start every time. This was my only desired upgrade from my previous MY12 4.4TDV8 AB L322. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims |

I am now officially confused chat GPT seems to suggest that the D300 is a straight six and been in RR since 2020. I know the D350 was only available in later cars but is that the only straight six? Geoff |

I bought a 2021 Range Rover fifty last year for the exact reasons that Geoff mentioned. Is the 460 twice as good, doubt it. |

Both the D300 and D350 were fitted to the L405 starting at the same time. They are just different tunes of the same engine. MY21.5 build began very late 2020. The iniital MY21 still had the 4.4 SDV8. L405 D350 SE Carpathian Grey D5 19" rims |

I don’t have much warmth for the L460. Current car has more toys than I really need and some are just a pain - why have a powered armrest in the back seat for example, what is wrong with a nicely weighted hinge? The current car will likely be my last FFRR - not least because imminent retirement will mean loss of car allowance, aka subsidy to run a fatty! 2024 - >. 2021MY L405 5.0 SC Portofino Blue

not worth the money over a 405 in objective terms, lovely as they are, and having driven one at a LR day they are nice and the seats are definitely more comfortable than my 16MY, but objectively not worth £50,000 more for an upgrade to an early model.

Before deciding it might be worth checking whether you can get insurance for a 460 at a realistic price, my existing insurers have consistently refused to quote for a 460, as have various other insurers. LR's captive insurers, Wrisk Transfer, would quote, but on a month by month basis and at an annual cost of about £3000, not attractive and with the risk that it is designed to get stock off the forecourt and after a while they refuse to continue or hike the premium leaving one stuck.

U see Geoff, it depends on the cash position.

Thanks Bill, the cash isn’t a problem and I hear what you say, if I was to hoard the cash to leave to the kids good old Rachel Reeves may well help herself to 40%. If I buy a car hopefully when I pass away as a depreciating asset it will probably be worth nowt but I’ll enjoy it in the meantime, there’ll still be plenty of other cash for the kids and pay for my care home - sorry Rachel.

just as a point the 460 later cars are fully controlled via the screen, however there was a period on the earlier models where the climate was controlled on dials under the screen as it is on my D5. they then deleted this in favour of fully buttonless.

Makes no sense whatsoever to lash £50k against the wall.. none, zilch, zippo…. Makes my eyes water as that’s virtually the depreciation hit I have had…. I do have the huge benefit of no kids to worry about, idling their lives away , on my money! Make no mistake, 20 years ago I would be going for the 405 and trying for the deal. It makes so little sense I will be chopping mine in… if not this week , then 2027… for sure my last car, I won’t last much longer and if I do last a few years, they will just take the keys away. However daft it seems, a huge hike in insurance would scupper the urge….. Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc He who dies with the most toys wins... |
