front airbag burst whilst on two post ramp

Hi all

Had my FFRR on my two post ramp at weekend doing propshaft and rear brakes, first time I have actually lifter it to do work on it. I stuck suspension in off road height and lifted it and started working on rear brakes (shoes, pads and discs and to change rear prop shaft. Got that all done and lowered it off ramp and noticed front passenger side had dropped. The missus mentioned that when she walked past it on ramp she heard a release of air but didnt mention it till later.

Got some soapy water but can actually feel and hear leaking from bottom of bag so think it must have perished when extended on ramp.

So some queries to the group mind

1)Is it actually OK to lift them on two post ramp and have I just been unlucky and strut was probably on way out anyway
2)do I change both fronts now given the other is probably in similar condition, they both look ok
3) How much of a pain are they to do?
4) Whats recommended place to buy and what make and cost, see quite a few variables. Think mine must be dynamic suspension also as there are wiring connectors at top.
5)I am sure I have seeing something previously about rebuilding strut with new bags which is cheaper, anybody got link to that? or am I better just changing for new whole struts

As always, many thanks in advance for any help

They are absolutely fine to lift on a 2 post lift. No different to jacking up and lifting a wheel off the ground

I've even seen them blow in the car park while sat stationary, and engine off Shocked

If finances allow, do them in pairs. If 1 has gone, the other will be in a similar condition

Fine, if the hub bolts are not seized...

Fit OE units if possible. Cheap parts are a bit Censored

If you are paying labour to replace the bags, if works out at a similar cost to fitting a new complete unit. If you are doing the work yourself, it is cheaper (no labour cost, obviously)

Easier to replace just the air bags than I expected. (Rimmer Brothers have a 'how to' you tube video).
Variety of replacement vendors. I used Aerosus without a problem but others on here seem not so fortunate.
I used an impact gun to undo the strut clamp bolts but I guess a breaker bar would do the job.
Supporting the hub assembly with a trolley jack to take the strain helped when reinserting the leg. Forty years of progress. 1972-2012

Rebuilding the struts is not too difficult, just note the order and which way around all the various seals face. The small ones at the top of the strut can be a bit problematic as they generally fall off as you remove the old airbag from the strut, so telling which way around they go can be an issue.

I did mine, but then noticed within a year that one front strut started to have less damping effect than the other, just from age. No fluid leaks evident when stripped down, either.

So in hindsight I wish I'd changed the full strut, thereby benefitting from getting new dampers as well.

Something you might want to consider if these are for the car in your signature, so potentially 13 years old now.

Do both at the same time and change the complete unit. Get the BWI replacements (OEM). Can be done in the driveway in an hour and a half. Everything else is a false economy.

If the two big strut to hub bolts are seized you'll need penetrating oil, heat and a 3/4 inch breaker bar. A monster impact gun might do it too, I dunno! In applying the heat be very careful to keep well clear of the cv boot. I thought I had, but the release of sticky cv grease proved I hadn't! On the plus side, the previously released bolts made replacing the boot easier!

Got 2 aerosus ones, took ages to come from Germany and have stuck them on, no issues with fitting raised straight away and has stayed there since so happy days. Just reused the original airline fittings as they seemed ok and so far so good. One of the hub to strut bolts on drivers side needed persuation but it came out in end. Had bought new bolts from maltings anyway. All good, thanks for advice

Don't forget to refit the airline to the bag BEFORE you set the strut back in place, you will never get it on otherwise. (3 pairs of hands needed Wink ) .

Seems all good, took car to work today, looked out window, no signs of dropping and no DTCs so happy days.

Whilst talking about the connections, I reckon you could get to air line connectors when strut is on, just no very easy for sure

As an addition to this post. If I am lifting it on my two post ramp do I set it to off road height before lifting then or opposite and use GAP to deflate all corners then lift, what do people do when they go on ramp as seen both recommended. My bag that burst was prob on way out and when I get it of it looked like it tore when it burst as was couple cm long. I had it on off road height when lifted it, whats the general consensus with this?

No need to do anything. The only time I use off road setting is when jacking a corner as it minimises the body roll and side forces on the jack and axle stands. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
