I've had success just adjusting mine the old fashioned way, but my understanding was that when the time comes to replace the shoes it's important to follow the correct procedure that you refer to.

Have you followed the bedding in procedure properly?

Does the procedure actually tighten up the hand brake, I was under impression its just for bedding shoes in but I would still need to manually adjust them, or am I wrong on this. Has anybody had bad handbrake and done procedure on road and then HB works? I have not done either yet, looking for guidance on which way is best |

I did the procedure after removing the brake disks and refitting, the whole procedure is a bit of a faf and you need a fair stretch of quiet road to do it but it does adjust the handbrake.

As you say, it's a bedding in procedure, which'll 'marry' the shoes to the handbrake drum - but it'll also properly centralise the shoes. Try re-adjusting them again with the knurled adjuster now that you've applied the handbrake a few times, you may well find it works better after that 2nd adjustment. If not then something may be incorrectly assembled? Handbrakes on these are usually very effective. Jon 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue 2014 Disco 4 HSE =================== Both my fatties now gone... fairly confident its assembled correctly so will look to adjust a little on the wee knurled wheels and see what like. What has everybody generally adjusted it to, tighten till locked to moving by hand then unwind 6 clicks, what is general consensus? |

Yes, tighten the knurled adjuster up again, until the hub cant be turned by hand, then turn the adjuster 6 notches back, my original point being that the shoes may not have been centralised when you first adjusted them. |

Just noticed the link to Bodsey's Brake Bible in Bardley's post above. Whilst very useful and I agree it's a brilliant bit of work from Bodsey - it should be noted that the handbrake setup is different on the L322 to the D3/D4/RRS vehicles. The main difference is there's no 2nd adjuster (allen screw / dropping wedge) on the L322, so adjustment of the L322 handbrake is actually easier. When I got an MOT advisory on the handbrake, i ended up replacing the discs, pads, shoes and all the fittings. I stripped the adjusters and restored the back plates but I still could not get sufficient HB performance, so I replaced the handbrake cables. Not had a problem since.

Earlier cars (pre 2007) with manual handbrakes suffered from cable stretch, and it's non-adjustable, meaning the cables had to be replaced from the handbrake lever and back.

No need for apologies David, your point is very valid for pre 2007 vehicles! |
