why would a failing alternator prevent the car from starting?
if the starter is spinning over correctly but not firing which i think OP said it is?

Sounds like it might be fuelling related to me ...

you can get rust converters that should stop it getting worse but you may need to expose a lot more of the surface under the paint to get all of it.

the manual only mentions jacking to lift the body, using jacking points and subframes not suspension arms.
I've only done it this way and never had any issues with suspension adjusting.

nice new battery is always helpful!

its a simple job.
remove battery lead, remove pollen filter housing.
then its easy to do it all just lying on top of the engine.

its better to have the vehicle in off road height before you start jacking otherwise you just have to jack it up to that height and then beyond to lift it up. less jacking if its already up there.
