As stated above I am pretty sure they all have paddleshift now but the S/C retained the Stick rather than dial for reasons of sportiness.

And the S/C has the old gearbox - not the new 8 speed.

The "old" gearbox is just great for that lazy 5.0 s/c Thumbs Up

So, dan_uk_1984, can I just walk into LR and buy the wheel, or is there other hardware required?

Both the ZF 5 speed and 6 speed are steptronic boxes. They are fully electronically controlled, rather than the "auto's of old". Classed as a Semi-Automatic. (even the P38 was electronically controlled and there was a mod to use the cruise or stereo buttons to change gear)

It's pretty much the same tech that goes into BMW cars - so the paddle shift feature out of BM's fits our scenario perfectly. The Rover 75 and MG ZT could also have the retrofit, which was at least a little more fitting.

There is lots of info all over the interwebs.

Gaz,

Really? I have the 2011MY 4.4 TDV8 and the paddles are marked - and + and only pull towards the wheel. Didn't know just one could control both up and down shifts. I'll have to check later on as that's really quite interesting. Agree with the other part about returning to drive.

These are very useful for downshifting without having to floor it for kickdown. Also was very good for use in the snow to slow the car without braking, only braking at last minute to come o stop.

I was told these were added as with rotary selector no way of manually shifting. 2010MY had the stick that could be used to shift.

Have a look at the disco forum as several people have converted their discos. TBH It works well with the 8 speed box, but not sure if it is worth it for the 6 speed. *Gone* Discovery3 HSE

Yes I know. I did the first Disco3 paddle shift installation ever, thanks to wiggs and Colin. I was just hoping the FFRR would not need splicing into wiring looms etc

I think that's because most owners of RR's haven't thought "you know what I think this car really needs is paddle shift"

You don't need to add new cables AFAIK because that's the benefit of digital over analogue signals. You just need 1 cable to carry the data.

Here is some info on the retrofit for the early X5's (if it can be done on an X5 it can be done on a RR)

More info, more complicated:

Thanks Dan
When I have a break from travels I will open up the RR and see what connections are available. If it is anything like the D3 then there is a bit of splicing involved where the connection to the gearbox ecu comes into the picture.
A big question is whether there are any circuits available in the "clock spring" behind the steering wheel, and if not will have to use something like pete bell's RF solution

On the BMW E46 you just needed to tap into the signal lines from the gearstick/lever (i.e. to replicate the contact closure when stick is pushed forwards & backwards). A bit heath-robinson but it was an easy retrofit, worked and was reliable.

I had an SMG M3 which has the paddles and found most of the time I just left it in 'Auto' but then again that was an SMG as opposed to a 'proper' automatic and unless you throttled off during upshifts it did change gear like you were on a track (which SWMBO & my 5 year old were not that appreciative of).

Also I much prefer the 'Left pull for downshift / Right pull for upshift) rather than the push/pull on either paddle scenario and finally yes we all like out toys but in reality is the FFRR a car that needs the paddles?

Having said all of this, if there was a bolt on replacement FFRR s/wheel with the paddles I'd have to check up the price and make an informed decision, as I say we all like our toys eh Thumbs Up

Dogman, Gaz,

I have had a look, and play on my car and indeed it is left downshift (-) and right upshift (+) only. No push/pull on either paddle, they only pull and have single control each. Gaz, don't know what model you got to drive - interesting though.

The paddles are not used often in everyday driving for me either.

Sooooo much better than the push/pull (as I'm sure Porsche owners will confirm)

Confirmed with "The Large One" (on D3 forum) NIck at Yeovil LR that the paddles for the L322 are available separately. I just have to figure out how to connect them then....
