My car has xenon dipped but main beam is a halogen bulb. The xenon is "cold" and the halogen is "warm" or blueish and orangeish if you prefer. whats the best choice for replacing the halogen to achieve a more blue light?

and Wattage - i've seen some blue 100W anyone tried them? Geoff

I have a great Phillips 5k xenon kit replacing my halogen full beam bulbs, I also replaced my headlamp bulbs with 5k Phillips ones... Brilliant upgrade...

These work mainly because The halogen high beam bulbs do VERY little in terms of light! But the xenon's put out 3-5 times more light then the halogens they replace... The original halogen bulbs are kind of overpowered by the flapper motors in the headlamps which create the lions share of light when the full beam is engaged... So this negates the couple of seconds needed for the xenon bulbs to warm...

The end result is very powerful full beam lights now even to the extent of feeling like the headlamp are poor when you have traveled a fair distance using full beam

you do know that the main beam is 'lost' in the brightness of the xenons ... ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan, it's not entirely lost but I probably notice it because it's as orange as Dale Wintons tan: in fact it's a lot like Dale Wintons tan, brings little to the party apart from an orange glow  Geoff

It's not really a 'main beam', because they're Bi-xenons - the xenon does both the main and low beam by way of a motorised shutter, that masks off part of the beam when you 'dip' them.

The halogen bulb is described as a 'fill in' bulb, as it supposedly lights up more quickly than the shutter can move out the way of the xenon bulb. I suppose we're only talking fractions of a second, but it's just there to stop the main beam appearing laggy from what i can gather.

The shutters are pretty instant, but since HID takes time to warm up, it's unable to flash when the lights are off, so the halogen is there for that too.

Additionally though, the colour rendering of halogen is far superior to HID (or LED), and the lower kelvin temperature light is better processed by the human eye, so be proud of that orange glow; it is helping with HID's shortcommings.

Thanks for the replies but I probably need to add that I realise that this is only a cosmetic change and the the "main beam" halogen does little or nothing compared to the bi-xenons. So the posts confirming that are a bit superfluous to my needs, all I want is a bulb recommendation for the H7s so that the colour is similar to the xenons.  Geoff

I think these are the bulbs CTC is on about, I had some in a car a few years back and they are a lot whiter than std.

But hunt around as I'm sure you can get them cheaper, plus I personally wouldn't do the HID route, you may get the right colour, but they wont "flash" because they have to warm up  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Ditto the above, and also for the reasons I posted above, but if you really want to go for an HID kit, make sure it's a decent one, like these: http://www.hids4u.co.uk/h7-xenon-hid-conversion-kits/ (DISCO315 ) It's important that effort has been made to ensure the arc is in the correct place, and cheapo ballasts will give poor bulb life, and performance.  Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

For reasons of bank balance, I'd stick with the normal Xenon bulbs and they react quicker than HID, and if your optically challenged you can get 100 watt bulbs for off road use and you could afford to get a spare set and still save 50% on HID  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I just fancy the idea of significantly more light on the front end without resorting to auxiliary lamps. I never flash headlights at anyone so that's not a problem. As the conversion would only be on the main beam, causing glare to other road users shouldn't be a problem either.
Will give it some thought.
