4.4 tdV8 turbo oil drain mod.

I am keen to hear of members experiences.
Have you had it done under LR approved warranty?
Does it cure the blue smoke problem?
How much does it cost if you have to pay ?
Please share your thoughts for and against.

Is there any way you can tell if this mod has been done? Mine is not smoking or acting up in any way at all, but I would like to know whether or not I am likely to have problems. I had it done on my Disco which was smoking badly on acceleration.

Stan,
Interesting, my dealer just keeps fobbing me off (Farnell Bradford).
Please keep this post updated with your findings.

I know that the main problem is that I just don't drive it hard enough, but but it is embarrassing the amount of blue smoke I get when I do get a chance to boot it.

PS.
I hope you are well and on the mend.
Cheers.

I have got a paper copy of the relevant Technical Bulletin ( LTB005513v4 ) which is very comprehensive with lots of pictures and 17 pages of detailed instructions, but , sorry, I have not got a scanner so aren't able to share it .

Thanks, I am in the dealers this week as I have the P040D code investigated - but no adverse effects resulting from that code. I will ask them to have a look.

Had a couple of instances of smoke on mine.

But it's normally down to pootling about or starting it and not moving it. Use the second turbo and it kind of gets rid of the issue.

So just boot it occasionally and it doesn't do it!!

Don't fancy having LR drill a hole in my engine block!! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

^

I had a DS as a loaner for a few days; impressions?

I thought it was put together pretty well, decent ride quality and space inside but for such a small engine, it drunk fuel and I wasn't trying to drive it like my 4.4 TDV8.

I was told that one of my turbos has an oil weep, which the mod would address - that is the only way I know about it as no smoke. No warranty and apparently LR do not offer any assistance with cost, it is about 8 hours work, mine is to be checked in the spring for deterioration. It would be nice if LR would contribute, as it seems a design fault and not a cheap fix. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I knew about this problem when I was looking for a 4.4 TDV8 earlier this year so when I found the right car I managed to provoke the smoke problems on the test drive. The car was in a main dealer (non LR) and they agreed to get the mod done as part of the deal, they had no luck getting any help from the local LR dealer and had the job done at Team Valley Land Rover and I have a copy of the invoice for £948.44 inc VAT.
I've done 8000 miles since and have had no signs of smoke or DPF issues (now touching wood and lucky rabbits foot while crossing fingers, toes, eyes & testacles).
When going through the service history there was a comment on the invoice for the service done at a LR main dealer at 30ishK miles that the turbo drain mod needed to be done, I can only guess that they didn't want to do it under warranty.
So in answer to the OP questions
Yes it works
Costs about £1000 at a decent independent
Getting LR to help seems a hit and miss affair
