@nino,
the owners manual says to get the oil to working temperature and then leave for 15 minutes so that the oil can drain down into the sump before checking the level .... ... - .- -.

Mike, enjoy your bbg,

Stan, that's what I said, if you shut engine off at full working temp and come back 30 min. later the temp will still be at half mark. at that time oil level should be one notch below max. in the morning the oil level should be at middle mark or a notch above. (depending on the outside temp.)
I did this readings many times to establish oil level with cold engine, like in the morning. much more convenient, don't you think.
hot engine oil check is for the convenience of the dealership. Thumbs Up

Nino,

Land Rover certainly didn’t think very sensibly when they did away with the dipstick.
The last thing I want to be doing is playing with steering wheel buttons when my hands are dirty from changing the oil, but at least I was able to wash my hands, which I doubt many mechanics do every time they recheck the level.
I got over 9litres out, but put less than 9 litres new oil in. (I have never topped up the oil between services.)

Nino my friend, you are a genius Thumbs Up Bow down
When I checked the oil level this morning before starting the engine it read exactly on the full line.

After getting it nice and hot, then leaving to stand for 30 minutes, I got the following;

Half a litre sucked out and now all correct.
Many thanks
Mike.
Also thanks to Adrian for the simple remedy to how to empty the siphon. Thumbs Up

Next time I am only going to fill with 8 litres of new oil. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Here is one on eBay, but if you wait for a Eurocarparts sale offer you will get it cheaper.

I have re checked oil levels again this morning, both hot and cold.
Cold, ie before starting engine, 1 notch above half full.
Hot after run and leaving to stand on level ground for 30 minutes, 1 notch below full.

What really shocked me was just how black the 1/2 litre of new oil that I sucked out was.
I will definitely be changing it twice a year just to keep it “flushed out” even though it will probably only do 4 -5 K miles in between changes.

,

if you do ~4K mi. oil changes, she is going to Love You and respond in kind. this is what I bought for my lady -

60 L. of MOBIL 1 5W-30 ESP, paid 320 quid.

Mike, why don't You do short write up on measuring oil level on 2011 and up 4.4 TDV8 engines, then Stan can put that in the Wiki. Cold engine oil level is both easier and more precise then procedure recommended by WM. I believe that oil overfilling is contributing factor to O rings and oil cooler gaskets failing.

Nino,

Mike I did mine recently but didnt suck it - I unhooked the suck pipe at the sump and dropped the oil. Possibly got more out as opposed to the suction method as I put in 8.5 litres and then needed a half litre top up.
EDIT: just saw higher up you got 9 litres out

Greg,
I got 9.25litres out , so unless it has been diluted by diesel doing DPF regens there couldn’t have been much left in?

When I re- filled with new oil, I initially put in 8 litres which read half full (cold) so I added a further 1/2 litre thinking that would be OK, but after running the engine for a few minutes to warm it up slightly, it read full .
Then Nino warned me to re- check the level when it had got to full temperature and I got the overfilled warning, so I have sucked out a further half litre and now cold it reads one notch over half and hot it reads one notch down from Max.

Conclusion,
I recon 8 litres is best as initial re-fill, get it hot, leave it to stand for 30 minutes, re-check level and add a cup full if needed to bring it up to near max “hot”.

Mike.
PS,

Please re- post or PM me details of where you got cheap Shell AF-L. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Greg, you will get same amount "sucking" or draining, there is second drain plug- right above crossmember pipe. I drain that every third oil change. it drains cc 1/2 liter.

Nino,
