L405 3.0 TDv6 Crankshaft failure (rumours & facts)

LR Warranty Cover - L405 TDV6 Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Failure - SSM72928

There have been a series of posts about the L405 3.0 TDV6 being prone to crankshaft failure. Suggestions of it being an inherent design fault. Rumours that it might not be covered under the LR approved used warranty (specifically, L405 that are no longer covered by the 3 year manufacturer's warranty).

Bulletin SSM71816

A search of Topix regarding this issue and the L405 does not yield the previously suggested bulletin reference SSM71816 - Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDV6 Diesel Engine.

Bulletin SSM72928

A search of Topix for every L405 model year (2013 to 2018) of the 3.0 TDv6 engine using the keyword 'crankshaft', does result in the following information being produced:

Title SSM72928 - Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine

Global reference SSM72928

This query with the LR A.U Warranty/ the LR Extended Warranty needs clarity.

On 06.01.2018, I telephoned LR A.U Warranty Administration, Yorkshire. A helpful technical advisor advised that rumours of their warranty not covering this L405 issue are inaccurate. He said that the warranty company will not dismiss a claim. Provided the vehicle has been properly maintained, is unmodified and as long as the manufacturer has not declared the issue to be an inherent design fault. I asked if anything was written down by the warranty company about this issue and such warranty claims being in jeopardy. He said there was not.

The advisor also explained that if, for whatever reason, a warranty claim was declined by the warranty company, they would refer the issue for JLR to address on behalf of the customer.

I was advised that under the A.U warranty, the company has authorised new engines.

It states quite clearly in enhanced warranty that the crankcase /crank is covered, after paying out £1300 PA for the cover the Courts and Trading Standards would be very interested in this development.
Knowing the editor of Autocar, I’m sure a report and story warning people of this development would make very interesting reading. It’s a known fault at JLR, a technical bulletin was issued, so this is a ridiculous thing to say.
Don’t think I’ll be purchasing the MY18 RRS because of this.

They will use this clause under their terms & conditions -

11. Design Faults and Recalls Any damage to parts, which are being recalled by
the vehicle’s manufacturer or which have inherent design faults are not
covered by this Warranty

They will quite rightly reject the claim and then refer you to Land Rover for goodwill !!

So in a word the Approved Used Warranty is worthless in the event of a crank failure - a terrifying thought...

Time to get the press involved, Johnski please do contact Autocar as this story is hard to believe !

Have you seen anything in writing confirming LR’s position on this or are you just relaying information given in a phone conversation?

Question

Any speculation on this forum and the sister forums, on the strength of something said in a phone conversation, could have serious consequences for the forum owners.

Not saying it wasn’t said in conversation, but this forum has no proof it was said and LR could get very arsey if the information is incorrect.

I'm sure my conversation was recorded by the Warranty Company and he quoted which clause they were using to revoke the warranty to not cover the cost of replacing the engine due to the failure of the stated covered part the "crankshaft". Thereafter it is down to goodwill of Land Rover !

Did you get an answer from the Warranty Co to say that they wouldn't cover it ?

Yes Car Care Plan confirm that a broken crankshaft is non-claimable.

That was quite revealing because they didn't enquiry whether the engine was in the VIN range affected by LR's service bulletin SSM71816. Which implies that they are going to duck out of any claim on any engine with a crankshaft issue.

A 2016 L405 3.0 TDV6 owner on this forum has reportedly experienced this failure (post linked to this thread). The LR warranty is said to cover the issue (albeit the car is under 3 years old).

It was an L320, which shares the same bottom end as the current 405/494

Despite threads asking the same question on the D3/4, RRS and this forum, there has still been no definitive answer from
LRCC.

Seems you have to take your chances with the warranty company (who would appear to reject any crank issues) then plead to LRCC for a goodwill gesture, which does not seem to be forthcoming from any member who has posted

In addition, anyone who has called myself seems to receive a 25% goodwill, still leaving the customer with a bill of circa £18k at main dealer rates...

Has anyone known of any 3.0 L405 claim for this issue being rejected?

Nobody seems to have posted on this forum to say an L405 claim (warranty or goodwill) has been rejected (unless I’ve missed it)?

I don’t see it being limited to rejecting claims for L319/320, and accepting claims for L405, just because it’s a different model

CCP decide whether or not to pay out on the claim...

Mikey and Craig seem to agree on this one, so i’d worry.......

If you can get something in writing then Thumbs Up

I’m wondering If any ‘goodwill’ payment includes a gag clause ?

The only L405 I’ve heard of with the issue was the infamous Jonttt, it was a while ago but he got paid out. Though i’d be far less certain now.

Goodwill starts at the point of sale

If there is a gap in the LR A.U warranty cover such that it does not cover any crankshaft issue with the L405, then LR franchises who sell these cars know, or ought to know, that it is an issue. Goodwill should start with openness and honesty when people are in the process of buying the 3.0 TDv6 from LR franchised garages.

Q (to the reasonable person) - If you knew that this was an issue when you bought the car and that it would not be covered under the LR A.U warranty, would you still have bought the car?

I, personally, wouldn’t buy any 3.0 T/SDV6 engined model, until a replacement engine comes down to a reasonable price to warrant it’s replacement

Dealers are quoting £22k to replace a D4 engine. The last one I priced for a customer was a smidge over £15k (with the engine costing £12k alone!)
But even a £15k repair on a car worth not a lot more is hard to justify for anyone

Meanwhile, a replacement 2.7 is less than £5k. I do wonder why the price difference...

Probably a daft question, but I'll ask anyway Embarassed

Throughout the post it's referred to as - L405 3.0 SDV6

However I thought the L405 was fitted with;

3.0 TDV6 (258PS)
4.4 SDV8 (340PS)
3.0 SDV6 Hybrid (340ps)

and the RRS came with the SDV6

3.0 SDV6 (306HP)

Interesting thread and thanks very much for posting.

I am supposed to be driving down to Suffolk tomorrow to collect a 2014 3.0 Vogue.

Should I stay here and kiss goodbye to my deposit? How bad is the topic?
