Carphone-wont light up.

I have an 02 plate l322 and was playing about and wondered how to get the carphone working. I installed a new simcard in the slot and put new batteries in the handset but the handset wont power up. Is it common for these handsets to become faulty? Or am I missing a trick. The simcar I have installed is an O2 sim but on the monitor screen under the telephone option it still says Install Sim.

Are you certain the sim is in correctly?

I recall the old handset type, I had that in my M5. PITA !

I'd rather spend a few hundred quid on a parrot system with bluetooth and have something up to date plumbed into the phone system instead. Just my opinion. Discovery 4 HSE

I believe the system should still operate even if the battery is out of the handset. The handset itself is only there for making phone calls when you want to get out of the car.

I've just checked mine, even if I take the bateries out the system still works.

Have you tried the master switch:

The sim should go this way:

Yeah I have an O2 sim inserted the correct way. I have checked the master switch aswell. So it seems I have an issue with the handset not getting power when its in the craddle-looks like the cradle might be disconnected? Where in the car are the modules etc that operate the phone?
The sim is brand new and has never been used-but doubt that would have an effect on the phone not getting power?

As I said, the handset doesnt need to have power, or be present for the system to work.

The workshop manual gives a good overview of the various components the phone system uses and their locations, you should check each of them to ensure their plugs are well seated etc and also for water damage.

As Dan says, handset is totally irrelevant. Mine's never worked, but I used the carphone all the time. Why would you want to use the handset? If you're driving you'll want to be handsfree via the microphone etc. For dialling you use voice control or the satnav control screen.

The batteries in the handset are rechargeable, but I never bothered to replace mine for the reasons above. Best thing is to just ignore the handset totally. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

I don't use texts on the carphone, since it has a separate sim. Do you have your main mobile connected via bluetooth?

Can't imagine using texts much from the carphone. I would have thought it would be possible to delete texts from the screen. Looking at the instruction manual for the phone, the relevant page seems to be page 37:

'Call up the sub menu, select "Delete text" and confirm' Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

I appreciate it should be possible - and I have the button to do it. However when I press delete it does nothing Sad

I can delete using the handset fine.

The reason I use texts is I text myself the address where I'm going to, or sometimes to-do lists. The real PITA is that the phone doesn't support VCards.

I'd like to get into the "BMW Assist" code at some point and figure out how to send addresses directly to the Nav as per google "send to bmw"

These are the components relating to the factory fitted phone kit. Apart from the cradle and handset (obviously!) the rest are located in the rear near side panel with the rest of the audio/tv & nav modules, if fitted.

For anyone still confused about why the handset doesn't need to be operational just compare the kit to a simple home phone.........The module is the brain of a fixed handset with the keypad located on the monitor up front and works just like any normal phone (assuming working sim etc). The bluetooth handset in the centre console is just an extension handset, in the same way as if you have a separate cordless handset at home, when the batteries die on any cordless handset you can still make and receive calls using any other phone in the house. This kit is no different.

"Incorrect SIM" would indicate a problem with the SIM itself or the cradle that reads the SIM, the fact that you have this message on the monitor and that the "telephone" option is displayed in the menu would indicate that is unlikely to be a wiring issue.

Andy.
