Suspension down on one side

I came out to this today..

A short synopsis..

The abs/traction light came on a fortnight ago along with warning messages 'HDC fault system inactive' 'suspension lowered' and a flashing amber warning for the active headlights not working.. however these all disappeared a short time later and have come and gone a couple of times.

I fitted a brand new battery, no difference.

I took it to the local garage, they plugged it in, the tool said there was faulty abs sensor rear left. I bought one, but before it was fitted I drove for a few days with no warning lights or messages. All was well.

New abs sensor fitted rear left a few days ago, now all the warning messages are back and they won't clear. Plugged it in again and it still says rear right abs sensor.. I've been advised to replace the abs ring rear right, I'm waiting on one arriving now..

But today, the suspension is down on one side.. I have 'HDC fault system inactive' 'suspension lowered' abs/traction/active headlamp warnings on the dash.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be going on? Thanks for any help.. 2010 FF 4.4 TDV8 Vogue - Gone

I wonder if you might have a broken wire / damaged loom which has affected the ABS. In the meantime, get yourself a code reader to save some £££.

This is an absolute steal if it's still available https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post2113430.html#2113430 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Snap!. Came out to the same thing 4 days ago. When I start it up it pumps itself up and drives ok but overnight the front passenger side slumps.

Same every morning. No fault codes, I am thinking airbag split. Will report back.

I had a suspension warning whilst on the M3 last Saturday, and woke up to exactly the same picture (albeit in Stornoway Grey) the following day, front passenger side slumped!

Having replaced both my front struts today, I had a tiny tear right on the bend in the front left bag, and the rubber did look pretty tired there.

I replaced both my front struts today, not a hard job if you need to do it: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post541019.html#541019

Mine were for a 2011 5.0 S/C with Adaptive Dynamics, if you are the 2007 TDV8 listed in your profile then you get to use the cheaper struts without the Adaptive bit Smile. The actual air bags are the same for both though.

You can choose to remove the existing strut, remove and replace just the airbag part, and then refit the strut. Or you can buy complete new struts with the air bag ready fitted. I chose the latter, obviously more expensive, especially with the Adaptive bit, but given this is my main car I didn't want to be doing the job again. Some people on here have had good success just doing the air bags, but I had more comments (including several LR specialists) suggesting replacing the complete strut is generally far more reliable, so I went down that route.

I used Island 4x4 for all my parts (and they arrived ~20 hours after ordering!). If you just email them with your VIN, they'll make sure you get the right stuff.

From a quick look, seems you would probably want:

LH complete strut: https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/spring-strut-...-6698.html
RH complete strut: https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/spring-strut-...-6699.html

Or just bags:

LH bag: https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/spring-front-...34328.html
RH bag: https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/spring-front-...30687.html

I also bought 4 new knuckle bolts and buts, as several people commented either the threads on the old ones were knackered, or they had to cut them off. Mine seemed to be okay, but I replaced anyway having bought them:

Genuine bolt: https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/bolt-suspensi...-9805.html
Nut: https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/front-suspens...-9806.html

Same story with mine so both front struts getting replaced Monday all being well.

I'm beginning to wonder whether FFRRs have some devilish built-in expiry timers on key components!

Yes, although given the springs are basically made of rubber, I'd consider them a wearable component anyway, and would prefer to replace them than many other things on the truck!

Mine looked to be the original LR/BWI parts from 2011, so 8.5 years and ~76k doesn't seem too unreasonable for some rubber bags! Reading around somewhere 8-10 years sounds like the general replacement age for these.

My leaking one had a minor tear and a pinhole in what appears to be the usual spot - right on the bend at the bottom of the bag, which is the bit that contracts/expands with the suspension. The rubber also looked pretty fatigued there as well with some cracking, etc. If it doesn't have a leak there, the other common failure mode of the front struts seems to be the internal seals between the air bag and damper body, where the strut runs through the air bag itself. The rear suspension has separate air bag and damper, which seems a bit less prone to issues.

That's the basically the first "extra" thing I've done to mine in 2 years, beyond standard servicing, brakes and tyres, so I'm happy enough to now know they are hopefully good for another 8 years Smile .
