Tow hitch removal

Evening everyone, not posted before, have a 2007 TDV8 Autobiography, I have trying to remove my tow hitch but I cannot work out how it is fixed to the tow bar. Its a westfalia towbar and has the drop hitch unit, it looks like there is a pin that goes through where it fixes to the actual tow bar. I,m not sure if the pin is threaded in or is just rusted solid. photo is of the same tow as fitted to mine. Any help would be appreciated

Assuming it's the factory one & not modified, that one is just a pin - there should be a clip through it on the other side.

Remove the clip & hit with a big hammer Thumbs Up

The threaded ones had a bolt head

Can,t see any clip on the pin neither can I see a hole in the pin for a clip, the pin is quite rusty though. It might be that the previous owner never fitted the clip to the pin. Blow torch and bigger hammer required I think. It is a westfalia towbar and the hitch is also, part no,s being 329077 and 323051

If you don't want that height adjustable tow bar, I'd really like it!

If there's no pin on the other side - then it's threaded

It must be otherwise it would just fall out eventually.......

It must be a variation I've not had - and I've had 3 different ones.....

I've had this one with a pin & also with a bolt

and also this one -

So I'm guessing your's is the later, which is threaded half way

Bit of lube on the pin, give it a tap, then tap the lever see if it frees up.

As said it’s either threaded or just a pin. If it won’t smack out then it’s threaded. Simple as that.

Getting the bar out may require a big hammer if it hasn’t been out for while!

My westfalia detachable boss needed a massive hammer after just 4 years....... Massive 5lb sledge, and a bit of a TAP..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Lovely, thanks. Really need the height adjustable one for towing a sheep trailer.

Alastair - if it is threaded I would,nt be able to turn the pin as the it hits the actual tow bar before I can get a full turn on it, the pin looks the same as your first pic but without the hole for the clip, unless its just rust covering the hole

I guess it's not threaded then Very Happy

Back to plan A - soak in WD40 for 24 hours & big hammer Thumbs Up

There are probably better things than WD, but works for me

I bought a genuine LR rubber bung to go in the end of the open receiver to finish it off nicely and keep any Censored out. Spayed some grease in there too. Hitch now in shed Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Yep - once the pin is out - then the fun really starts - trying to get the hitch out of the receiver Rolling with laughter

If the pin is corroded in, then expect the same for the hitch.

There was someone who resorted to a bottle jack between the drop plate & horizontal bar as the only way to get theirs out.....

Jack it up with a trolley jack under the tow hitch. That might break the rust Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
