@Superspoons - I've probably gone way OTT with mine due to the fact I've had the ramp. I've probably done a fair amount of work that it didn't actually need. Not like me to go charging straight in though apparently... Laughing

Thanks Alan Smile Glad to have finally got them fitted!

Just a few more little jobs to do and this car will finally be where I want it to be I reckon!

Following on from my PCV thread here: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic63251.html

I started to strip down to get to the vacuum leak I discovered with the smoke tester last night.

The Supercharger is now removed.

I then decided to spend a bit of time on the charger this evening as I’ve got the bearing kit arriving either tomorrow or Saturday from Powerhouse.

It’s about time I had some good luck… there’s barely any wear on the rotors and there’s no float in the rotor pack bearings so it looks like it can be rebuilt without much fuss.

Just need to clean them gently to remove my oily finger marks.

With a bit of luck the bearings from Powerhouse will be here tomorrow Smile

Tonight saw a bit more time on the lathe to make an adapter for the smoke tester Smile

That was then screwed into a scrap bit of steel that I’d drilled bolt holes in the right place on.

I then put some foam on the back of that to help it seal and bolted it to the charge cooler.

And connected the pipe from the smoke machine to it.

Initial pressure testing at 10PSI didn’t reveal anything. I then upped the pressure to 20PSI and there was a tiny bit of smoke visible from underneath the charge cooler on the OS bank of cylinders.

I removed the charge coolers as I’ve got new gaskets arriving tomorrow. If I could get my hands on the little 🤬 who had been in there before me I’d willingly do time for killing him. Instead of replacing the gaskets, everything had silicon on both sides of it. It’s taken me 2 hours with a Stanley knife blade removing all the mess.

Anyway, once the charge coolers were off I decided I’d do the valve cover gaskets as they were leaking oil down both sides of the engine. If you do it when the charge coolers are in place you need to depressurise the air conditioning. Thankfully, doing it this way you don’t.

First job for tomorrow after a trip to the dealer to collect parts is to spin it over on the crank pulley and check the valve clearances. That’ll give me a good idea on how badly the valve seats have suffered on LPG as when the seats are knackered there’s no clearance.

I’m hoping that they’re OK as I don’t want to go any further then this at the moment despite having a brand new set of cylinder heads on the shelf in the workshop.

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Is 11am to early to start drinking!?!?

Spot the difference:

The first picture is of the drivers side head. The second picture of the passengers side head.

The cam lobes on the drivers side head line up with each other and the chan is nice and flat.

The cam lobes on the passengers side head aren't in line and the chain looks like a 🤬 humpback bridge. The chain has so much slack in it that the tensioner is fully extended.

Looks like my tales of not doing the heads were a joke, eh!

Ouch!!!! Just when you thought that you were near the end Big Cry I believe that the sun is over the yardarm by 11.00 hrs Sir

but, look on the bright side......

You already have those lovely shiney new heads

Doing the chains / tensioners and maybe the heads means you will almost have a new engine.

Lastly, it gives muppets like me an excellent read when you post about all your hard work Sir Bow down Bow down Bow down

I think it may be time to reward yourself with a large libation, add some tasty comestibles and call it a hydraulic lunch Very Happy

I guess it’s lucky I found it before or skipped teeth or snapped. If it had skipped or snapped it would have made one hell of a mess.

Every cloud n all that. Although it certainly didn’t feel like it a couple of hours ago!

Timing chain kit:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254637686954?mk...media=COPY

Special tools for removing crank pulley and setting timing I’ve bought from Piet Smile

Cylinder head gaskets are £71 each.

Exhaust manifold gaskets aren’t expensive.

Timing cover gaskets aren’t bad either.

The rest of the gaskets are in a box I collected from Taggarts this morning.

It’s another thousand pounds going into it though. 😫

Maybe we add a power upgrade twist at the same time… 🤔 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Just priced everything up…

LH Head Gasket - £70.56
RH Head Gasket - £70.56
LH Manifold Gasket - £35.41
RH Manifold Gasket - £35.41
Large Front Timing Cover Gasket - £28.24
Small Front Timing Cover Gasket - £27.32
Timing Cover O-Ring - £5.83
Crankshaft Oil Seal - £37.36
Charge Cooler Gaskets - £74.72
Valve Cover Grommets - £31.20
Cam Sprocket Bolts - £11.12
Tensioner Bolts - £31.64
Crank Pulley Bolt - £9.55

Total in gaskets and bolts - £463.78.

That’s on top of the £180 I spent at the dealer this morning for all of the intake gaskets and injector o-rings.

Then there’s the timing chain kit on top of that at £465.

Best don my crash helmet before venturing home from the workshop this evening!

Here’s a video showing the difference in the chains:

The first chain which is still tight is the one on the drivers side head. The second is obviously the passengers side head.

What’s surprising is it had a miss when cold but was incredibly smooth once warmed up.

TBF half of that is because you have a seat of heads on the shelf and are going to swap them in.

Do they need replacing? Or is it your belt and braces approach to this car (which I don’t disagree with). If existing heads aren’t too bad can you sell to recoup some of this outlay.

My car has had LPG on it for years. The AJV8 engines suffer on LPG due to the valve seats being soft.

I can’t get feeler gauges between my cams and tappets meaning that the seats have worn so the heads need to be swapped to get everything back within spec. Either that or have the valve seats changed in the current heads.

No point going this far and reassembling it without doing the job properly! 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather
