I wasn’t going to publicise that Laughing

I was coerced into doing it. Still keep thinking of taking it down as I really don’t like the sound of my own voice and wish I’d tidied the work bench more before doing it.

Am just about ready to reassemble now but am tempted not to video it as I don’t want proof of a cock up if anything goes wrong!

Supercharger back from vapour blasting today.

Promptly stuck in the dishwasher to make sure there’s no media left anywhere near it!

Can you tell Mrs H is out tonight?

A little present from Powerhouse also arrived today.

I was going to go for the 10% but couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of machining the snout and after reading the link Sandy posted decided the 6% would be sufficient.

And you should continue the videos

Your voice is completely fine. I do a lot of training videos and think I sound awful. Everyone else says they’re great. It’s the knowledge imparted that’s important.

How much was the pulley, if you don’t mind me asking..

I assume you need a shorter belt as well. What other changes need to be made.

You are making it all look very DIYable a specially if no remap required as Sandy suggested from memory

Also, as it goes back together, can you show where the oil filler is and why it’s such a pain to fill

Thanks

Pulley was £185 from Powerhouse Automotive. There’s a chance that it might need a small amount of material removing from the snout but nothing like the 10%.

Filling it is an awkward sod of a job just to get the plug in and out. With the engine cover off, look for the snout of the charger, then look to the right of it (passengers side of the car).

It’s much, much easier to do that then it is to remove the charger.

Everything is removed from the front of the engine. Timing cover is coming off tomorrow, then with a bit of luck the heads will be off tomorrow afternoon too.

New chains and tensioners arrived today but the slowest bit I reckon is going to be setting the valve clearances. The tappets aren’t shimmed, it’s the actual buckets you need to change so there’s going to be a lot of measuring going on and then ordering the new tappets from Duckworths.

No its not a pain to replace see https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic55392-45.html

If you remove the intake its even easier.

Agreed.

The most awkward part of the whole job was getting the plug back in but it wasn’t a pain as such - just awkward.

Easy enough, just don’t rush it.

IIRC, it’s a 3/16th Allen key you need to remove the fill plug too. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Good point about the Allen key size.

Also do not over tighten, its not necessary it has an o ring. mine was tightened by a gorilla so was difficult to remove.

More progress has been made today!

To get the timing cover off you need to remove the air con compressor and the bracket that holds it which is mounted to the block. Some Censored who has been in here before had cross threaded one of the bolts and it sheered whilst removing it so that’s going to need addressing before reassembly.

Other then that, disassembly has been very straight forward.

Here’s how the block looks this evening.

The heads are now both on the toolbox with the cams and timing gear.

Interestingly, the timing chains that go from the crank to the intake cams were still tight. It was both chains that link the intake and exhaust cams in each head that had a lot of slack in them.

With the heads off, you can actually see a difference in the way the inlet valves are seated in the heads.

Cylinder 1:

Cylinder 2:

Cylinder 3:

Cylinder 4:

Someone has definitely been in at this engine before. One of the bolts on the cam bearing caps was loose, half of the bolts on the exhaust manifolds were loose, and one of the cam caps was marked with black marker pen.

Unfortunately, I also think one of the camshafts is scrap.

Debating over a pint of Guinness what to do about the cams now. Am trying to decide between buying a couple of used ones off eBay in the hope I can make a decent set of buying new.

Cams for the old Rover V8’s were readily available aftermarket but these newer engines don’t seem to be available from anywhere other then LR at £350 each.
