England 2006 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Zambezi Silver

Just catching up with the thread David after being away - the SC is looking great Thumbs Up

You've reminded me that I need to sort out my heatshield too along with my boot seal - I had a puddle of water in the spare wheel well after a substained downpour a few or so ago. Gavin

Thanks Gavin.

Had a prod around the DVD changer earlier as it wasn’t working. I freed the jammed cassette but it was still dead. On further disassembly I found that it had been damp.

I’d ran out of contact cleaner so having a trip to Halfords for another tin shortly and will have another go at cleaning it in a bit. Kinda hoping that giving it a good scrub might tease it back into life but am not going to hold my breath.

lets hope and see you may just get lucky David!!
I have never used mine since i had the car, when i brought it i found a Bovee thingy in the glove box and have never looked back.
Rear brakes is my next job, followed by trying to find out why my right rear damper keeps causing a suspension fault!! its an odd one as it is a new Bilstien unit. if i unplug it and plug it back in it works fine for a few days.
I need to trace the wire back to the control unit and make sure it is not shorting some place.

Looking forward to your car being MOT'd and a road report Thumbs Up 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

I’ve given the PCB a good scrub with some contact cleaner and a toothbrush and it now looks spotless. Didn’t have time to plug it in again this evening so will have another look at refitting it tomorrow evening.

Thanks Craig Smile

DVD player is dead so not wasting any time on that. Cleaning the PCB on it wasn’t enough unfortunately. Will keep an eye out for a reasonably priced one as it’s a nice to have rather then a need.

When the car was converted to LPG as the coolant pipes to the reducers crossed the back of the engine they put a saw through the engine covers and cut it in half. When I removed the LPG the cover only sat on the front 2 mountings as the rears had been removed and the cover cut.

I bought the mountings from Duckworths and a new cover from eBay. The cover arrived today and it was in great shape but dirty so I gave it a good clean.

After that I treated the plastics and fitted it to the car.

Did find one more job to do today though…

When the wheels were refurbished in November I fitted a new set of centre caps. Land Rover price these at £29 so I bought a set on eBay for £16.99. Bear in mind the car has been dry in the workshop since February, they were looking Censored .

spoke to Duckworths Land Rover last week and they said that the £29 price tag from Land Rover is actually for a set of 4 so I ordered them and fitted them today.

It’s just the little things that finish the car off Smile

After a couple of days of torrential rain, I’m pleased to report the spare wheel well was perfectly dry today too! Looks like it was indeed the tailgate seal.

Thanks Very Happy

Remembered one job I’d forgotten to do earlier today… I’d not bedded the handbrake shoes in after I adjusted them so today I decided to run it up and down the lane and bed the handbrake in.

It was at this point I realised that the handbrake is useless. It’s got new shoes and new handbrake cables fitted to it and I thought I’d followed the instructions to adjust it properly but I can’t have done.

It’s meant to be getting trailed to the specialist for alignment and MOT tomorrow afternoon so I’m going to phone them and ask if they’ve got time to adjust the handbrake whilst they‘ve got it. If not, I’ll adjust it tomorrow and have to take it in on Wednesday morning.

In other news, I did around 4.5 miles going back and forth down the lane today and am pleased to report it’s running absolutely perfectly. The engine is silky smooth and the gearbox is changing gear perfectly. Better then ti was before I think. I wonder if the engine not having been perfect has confused the gearbox with it not creating the torque that it needed when it was expected.

Fingers crossed the specialist can adjust the handbrake as I’m on call this week and time is short. Bit annoyed with myself for not noticing it sooner though.

I have the same problem with my handbrake David - New shoes, springs & clips but not new cables though. Despite following the process and 'clicking back the adjuster' its a slack as a slack thing. Was fine when I set it so really odd.

I'll be interested to see what you or they find... and how its setup to work Thumbs Up Gavin

Spoke to the specialist earlier today and he said he was snowed under and short of men this week so would appreciate me having a look at the handbrake if I could.

So… i emptied the workshop and stuck the RR back on the ramp. Removed both rear wheels, removed the bungs from both discs and tightened the adjusters up until I couldn’t rotate the disc at all and then backed it off 8 clicks on the adjuster as per the manual. I then reassembled and tested it. The handbrake was better at this point but not to the point that it would have passed an MOT.

I then put it back on the ramp, tightened it right up again and turned it back 6 clicks. Reassembled quickly and tested it. Thankfully this time it was much better so I’ve got everything crossed that it’ll pass it’s MOT tomorrow. The only thing that I’m concerned about is the handbrake.

I’d decided that I didn’t want to drive the car until the alignment was fully set up so I was going to take it to the specialist on the trailer behind the other L322. However, this afternoon we had some torrential rain. The gutters were overflowing, there were floods on the roads, and it was just not fit to be outside. Unfortunately, this was at the time that I’d need to have been loading the car on the trailer and securing it.

So… I decided that in the interest of staying dry and not getting soaked that doing 12 miles wouldn’t do much damage to the tyres! 6 months and 3 weeks since I last drove it I set off on the back roads to get to the specialist. I avoided the busy roads and kept the speed below 40.

I’d forgotten how much I missed this view. (For the avoidance of doubt… picture taken by the back seat passenger!)

Now… onto the important bit - how did she drive!?

Well, I guess there’s only a few words to sum it up… Beautifully, amazingly, silently!

The ride on the car is utterly fantastic, you can hear bumps but can barely feel them. There is virtually zero road noise from the Pirelli Noise Cancelling tyres, there is now zero noise from the drivetrain which was the main reason I started this whole job!

The engine… after I rebuilt the top end of the engine you cannot hear it or feel it when idling and when accelerating or driving it is silky smooth and has a lovely purr to it. Due to it not being aligned I didn’t try the shiny pulley on the Supercharger.

In summary, I’m as happy as a pig in Censored this evening. If the car drives this well before it’s been properly set up then it’ll be utterly fantastic when it’s been fully aligned tomorrow. Smile

Will report back tomorrow, hopefully when it’s got a valid MOT!

This one is the electronic parking brake, other then the adjusters on the shoes, there’s very little you can adjust on it.

The park brake issue is probably the shoes binding on the backplate, I always used a cable tie to apply a bit of Nickel grease on the rubbing points and a screwdriver to pull the shoes away for access.
Secondly, once I'd adjusted the shoes up, I'd give the 'drums' a good smack or three with a copper hammer, this helped centre the shoes and I could usually get another two or three clicks on the first beating, repeat until there is no more slack, then back off 8 clicks, rotate the access hole to the sprung 'wedge', slacken off the 4mm hex screw and give it a wiggle in case the wedge is bound up with brake dust, re-tighten the hex screw and rotate the hub to check for any signs of binding.

Having wrote that out, it reads as a right faff but I don't remember it being at all onerous - But it was something I was doing several times a week if not a day. Worst case is you'll need to remove the shoes and clean up the rubbing points with a Dremel or similar to reduce the corrosion-induced friction.
