United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

Thanks Graeme,

I'm lucky enough to be working on a ramp so will put a transmission jack under it and drop it onto that. I'll be removing my hubs completely as I'm going to change the wheel bearings when I change the diff so hopefully shouldn't be too bad.

One thing David be careful with the wheel bearings I did mine and am about to replace front offside hub as the bearing is moving in the case I had to do one of the rears as well - to be honest cant remember where I got the bearing though got most from Dan I also had the rear prop redressed replaced the front prop and all the driveshafts when I did mine a few years ago think I was on about 160k I also replaced both diffs they were done at my local garage think Tommy might be a member on here I will ask him

Thanks Sandy, that's disappointing that your bearings are moving in the hub!

Will see how we go as we progress.

I think David they were not original parts the garage in the village got them for me and pressed them in but
I think they got some aftermarket bits

Hopefully that’s all it is! I’ve got 4 genuine LR bearings to go on here.

My 36mm socket arrived today and that combined with the impact gun made short work of removing the hub nuts.

I was expecting problems getting the shafts out of the hubs but a tap with a copper hammer saw them both removed so it looks like I’ve been pretty lucky so far!

Well done mate, its a lottery whether the drive shafts come out easy, sometimes they just slide out and other times they need beating out.
Good luck with the rest of the build Thumbs Up

Thanks Dave Thumbs Up

Most awkward part so far has been manipulating the old diff out of the gap in the subframe. Not looking forward to getting the new one in either!

Sounds like you was pretty lucky with the shafts mate that's for sure. I've gotta do the cv joints on mine once I've done the welding but dreading the fact if they don't come loose I'm going to be on a certain creek without a paddle

Once I got the hub nut off I was bricking it after what I'd read... Not gonna lie, I did breath a sigh of relief when they both came out.

Going to spend some time this week cleaning things up and giving bits and pieces a lick of paint whilst it's stripped Smile

It's much cleaner under there from a rust perspective then I expected it to be so might as well try and help it stay that way. Although I've done a mega amount of work to this car, I kinda can't help but think I've got lucky with a starting point.

By intermediate drive shaft bearings….

Do you mean the CV joints on the front half shafts ?

No, there's a housing that bolts to the side of the engine with a separate bearing and oil seal on it to support the middle of the longer half shaft.

That's the bearing I call the intermediate one, I think Land Rover call it a thrust bearing.

It's inside this housing that bolts to the side of the block.

Got it.
This is the support bearing for the “rear” prop shaft that comes in 2 pieces, and runs from the transfer box to the rear differential…. And the central bearing support is where the 2 pieces of the rear prop shaft meet. It was an advisory item on my last MOT
