2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

I’ve been spending hours cleaning everything before reassembly at the moment.

The Supercharger has insulators on either side of the charge coolers that sit between the valve covers and the charge coolers. These were virtually non existent on the old one as they had perished and were disintegrating as they were touched. I’ve replaced both of those:

I then refitted the MAP sensor and symposer valve to the Supercharger ready for refitting.

When I got the car I noticed that the power steering reservoir wasn’t sitting straight. Upon closer inspection the welds on the factory bracket were awful. They had only just caught and it was that weld letting go that was causing the reservoir to sit lop sided.

I was going to clean it up, weld it and paint it again before refitting it to the car. I decided to Google the part number that was stamped into the bracket.

That part number (QEU500060) comes up at £10.62 inc VAT. By the time I’ve spent some time cleaning it, welding it and repainting it, I thought that for the sake of 10 quid I’d just replace it.

However, that part number has now been superseded to LR036453 and there’s been a slight price revision!!!

It’s gone from £10.62 to £119.90!!!

So… I’ll clean it up, weld it and paint it before refitting it to the car!

Little more progress this evening…

Injector seals were all replaced using the special tools, then they were refitted using the slide hammer. I replaced all 8 plugs and torqued them tonight too.

First step of doing the injector seals is to slide the teflon seal down the taper tool to open it up.

There’s a dimple in the end of that tool that sits over the end of the injector.

You then butt the tool up with the injector and slide the Teflon seal onto the injector.

You can see how stretched the seal is on the injector once it’s fitted.

This is where the next tool comes into play. You push the injector and seal into the end of the resizing tool marked “1”.

You then turn it around and push the injector into the end labelled “2”.

Once that’s done you can see that the Teflon seal is snugged up to the injector.

I then applied a tiny smear of grease to the seal and used the slide hammer to refit them back into the engine.

The plugs were also changed using the original NGK plugs and were torqued to 20NM.

After that I ran out of time this evening so refitting the fuel rail and coils will have to wait. Unfortunately I’m busy on Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week so I likely not be able to do anything else with it until Friday evening or the weekend now.

Managed to get a few hours on the Range Rover today.

First up the new clips were fitted to the injectors. They’re not really “clips” as such. They just sit around the injector (you just push them on from the top).

After that you sit the fuel rail on top and give it a nudge so that it seats on top of the injectors. The clips sit between the injector and the fuel rail so when the fuel rail is torqued down, they hold the injectors in situ.

Then the coils were refitted and torqued down.

After that I cracked on with re-fitting and re-connecting all of the wiring looms, re-fitting the pulleys and tensioners and the new water pump to the front of the engine, and then started re-fitting the Supercharger.

Land Rover have a “special tool” for refitting the Supercharger. I got some M8 threaded rod and cut it into 4 x 15cm pieces and screwed them into the supercharger bolt holes in the cylinder heads. This held the gaskets in place and allowed me to stick a piece of wood under the charger to stop it going sideways whilst I clipped the throttle body coolant hose back on underneath it.

Once the hose was clipped back on I removed the block of wood and gently lowered the Supercharger down the threaded rod and fitted 4 of the 8 bolts that secure it. These were torqued to spec and the threaded rod was removed allowing the other 4 bolts to be fitted and torqued.

The charge coolers were then refitted and all 25 bolts were torqued to spec in the correct sequence, the bracket that holds the wiring harness and the bracket that holds the engine cover were also then refitted. The PCV lines were refitted along with the vacuum lines from the back of the supercharger, the high pressure fuel pipe and the thick foam covers over the injector rails and cam covers were then refitted as well. I then fitted the oil filter housing with the new gasket and a new oil filter and the throttle body with its new gasket as well and connected it to the coolant pipe that runs underneath the supercharger.

At this point I called it a day. The actual engine work is now all finished, it’s just the coolant hoses, fan shroud and fan to refit tomorrow. Then begins the job of bleeding the cooling system.

Once all that’s done I need to remove the drivers side front wheel to get in and change the starter motor thanks to some gorilla tightening the solenoid wire so tight that it sheered when I removed it.

Anyway, 3 months after the car arrived I reckon it’s just about finished now. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I’ve been looking at Discovery 3 recently for the load carrying capacity of them recently. They’ll take a pallet sitting flat on the floor. They won’t replace this though

This 322 is a keeper though, whatever else I buy will sit alongside this one!

Whilst I was reassembling the cooling system today, my Dad brazed the bracket that holds the power steering reservoir. After he was done I gave it a quick coat of paint and fitted it back to the car and reattached the power steering fluid bottle.

All of the coolant pipes, new thermostat, and coolant bottle were all refitted. Then I fitted both air boxes and the intake pipework.

Once that was done I started to fill the cooling system. It took just shy of 10 litres of coolant. According to the workshop manual it takes 19 litres so there must have been a lot still in the block. I then loosened the 3 bleed screws to bleed the coolant (1 on the coolant bottle, 1 on the supercharger water pump and one on the aluminium pipe coming from the heater matrix).

The last part of bleeding the system is to remove the bung thats on the aluminium coolant pipe. Unfortunately, this plastic bung sheered

Once that had snapped and I couldn’t do much more with the cooling system so I filled the car with 8 litres of oil.

After that I had a look at the starter motor. The manual says to remove the drivers front wheel. Thankfully, I managed to remove the plastic cover and then the heat shield with the wheel still on. Removing the nuts that hold the drop link to the anti roll bar on both sides and releasing the drop link from the anti roll bar allowed you to pull the anti roll bar down and remove the starter motor.

If it wasn’t for the coolant bung snapping then the car would’ve been running again tonight.

The oil looked quite dark when it came out so this lot is essentially going to be a flush. I’m going to remove the fuel pump fuse from the car and then operate the starter for 2 full cycles to ensure that there is oil around the engine and it’s built oil pressure. I’ll then reinsert the fuse and hope it fires! I’ll then switch it off, add some Millers engine flush and start is again letting it idle for 15 mins whilst I check for coolant leaks, etc. before draining and refilling it with fresh oil once more. Hopefully that’ll ensure that it’s nice and clean and fighting fit.

Anyway, if our local dealer have that bung in stock then the car will be running tomorrow now, if not then it should be on Tuesday
