Just a word or warning for anyone that may be as foolhardy as me and assume that the jack supplied in the car is up to the job. I had a front wheel puncture last week (arrow shaped piece of flint went straight through the tread), which wasn't too much of a disaster as the two fronts were just about due to be changed.

I was parked up on a solid, level piece of ground, so I decided to stick the spare on. However, at the point at which the car was up on the jack and I pulled the wheel off the hub, the jack buckled and gave way. It all happened in a split-second, but by a stroke of luck, the wheel was still upright and in my hands. Consequently the wheel was caught as the car came down and cushioned what would otherwise have been a pretty terminal incident. That left me with the front o/s nose of the car near enough down on the floor and the wheel trapped underneath.

After a few phone calls and a bit of running around I came back with a couple of trolley jacks, which meant I could get the car back up, the trapped wheel out and the spare on. By a lucky miracle I got away with no more than a bit of scoring to the inside of the alloy, where the hub came down and no damage to the car (I've since had it checked out).

I know it's a big old thing, but you'd think you could trust the jack supplied for a quick up and down tyre change! As it is there was no harm done, but this could just as easily have been an expensive and, more seriously, dangerous incident. I dread to think what would have happened if my hands had been caught - I'd never play the violin again!

you are indeed one of very many that have found that the supplied jack is useless....this has been mentioned here on the forum loads of times hence the many threads asking about trolley and bottle jacks..

saying that, i and a few others have used said supplied jack to do a wheel change without any problems... ... - .- -.

I've used the jack to change a wheel before, wasn't a great experience although it didn't pose many problems. I think in future I'll try the air sus trick instead.
