Thanks Craig,

On ours, literally just a small part of the bezel (pictured) has that slither of liquid mercury look. Is it possible to open the unit up and swap that part?

Craig also seems to confirm that the cornering LED I fitted will do no harm and is hopefully safer than the OE halogen bulb I have just removed.

Below is the cornering bulb I ordered. The below bulbs look superb along with the OE xenon and the aftermarket LED sidelight bulbs I've just added. The clear white colouration looks very smart and not at all aftermarket. However, on a practical note they are less effective than the yellow OE OSRAM ones. I am keeping the LED cornering bulbs in for reasons of being less likely to melt the unit than OE and because they look so good. Whilst the pair I got are actually advertised as £32.95, I negotiated a delivered price of £25 for two bulbs (HQ Autobulbs are based in Dorking and I have - on repeat orders - found them to be prompt, helpful and reputable, for example one of the 2 cornering bulb housings was slightly weak on arrival and they have sent a replacement without quibble):

Cornering Lamp bulbs H8 35watt (H8 PGJ19-1 Xenon WHITE 29W HIGH POWER CREE LED):

It's a design flaw and the only remedy to correct the melted lens is to replace the entire headlight unit, which is what my S/C had done by the dealer when noticed. Si. <This is my name.

Very common. And LR would have been in trouble if more people had noticed. But you do have to look closely - and most people don't.

LEDs should remedy the situation completely. Best thing since sliced bread.

Thanks Steve Thumbs Up

Before starting this process, I was a bit wary about 'modding' light bulbs etc as I didn't want to cheapen the car, nor fall foul of the law or risk consequential damage to the car by putting non OE parts on the car.

However, having had lots of help from the forum as per the below bulb upgrade link, you're right, if you do your homework and take care to source the correct bulbs, the difference in lighting performance is noteworthy. It makes the car more visible, hence (IMO) improving safety without dazzling other road users. The look of carefully selected LED bulbs to compliment the OE xenon headlight bulbs can also be superbly well balanced. The LED bulbs look, crisp, modern and clean. I'm unashamedly glad to have eradicated those yellower looking OE Halogen bulbs that were within the headlight unit (namely the sidelight and cornering bulbs).

The most expensive pair of LED bulbs I've had to buy to date are actually the cornering bulbs which I got reduced from £32.95 to £25/pair delivered (UK supplier). Initial thoughts from other learned forum members were that as these cornering bulbs only come on for a few seconds, some people might consider that to be a lot of money for a little used bulb. However, now that I've discovered for myself (as confirmed by you, CTC & Bellini that the yellow OE Halogen bulbs can definitely cause headlight units to melt), spending approx £25 to eradicate this potentially expensive risk and give you better looking lights as well, does not appear to be a lot of money at all.

Which brings me back to the original point of this particular melting query post. A number of people have since said that the issue is a 'design fault'. For clarity, when comparing my own pictured minor bezel imperfection with Bellini's obvious pictured meltdown, my question was more, do we think my headlight unit likely left the factory with this imperfection on the bezel or do we think that at some stage the OE halogen bulb has stayed on a few seconds too long which just, just started melting the bezel but was switched off again before proper damage was done.

As per the attached link intro, any bulb changes that you make are your responsibility and are carried out are your own risk:

Remove the OE halogen cornering bulbs and replace them with LED seems to be the remedy to prevent this melting of the unit.

So will this just be a matter of swapping bulbs or any changes to the wiring required??

Thx, Thumbs Up Mike.

Mike, it really is simple. Remove the 3 grille screws, lift off the front grille, remove the 3 headlight screws, towel under headlight to stop bumper getting scratched, partially slide headlight out over towel, unplug headlight cable, fully slide headlight unit out, take off round cornering housing cover, anticlockwise turn of cornering bulb holder, unclip halogen bulb and replace with plug and okay 'off the shelf' LED bulb. Each headlight can be done in under 10 minutes. These are the bulbs I have used. Been using for a week now and very pleased with them. I got them for £25/pair delivered to mainland UK.

Just make sure you're happy both that they're safe for your car and with the legal requirements where you intend using the vehicle.

Only comment I will make is that LED's are great as DRL's and marker lights, but don't cast light like the OE halogens. If you don't need your cornering lights to actually fulfill their original function (i.e. light the road as you turn into a side road) - then all is good. If you do then you need to shell out for really really good lamps!!! Land Rover Addict

Hmmm, living in the country side, the extra lights when cornering is always handy at night... Rolling Eyes Mike.
