Does the engine oil need to be drained so as to be able to replace the oil filter and the gasket seal?

The oil filter can be quite tricky to get access to. I picked up one of these when I changed the oil on mine, great tool had the filter out in seconds. From what I have read the sc has more hoses etc restricting the filter than on mine. But this tool will do the job on a long extension |

The shape of the gasket/ O ring is a tad confusing Stan.
